Had to laugh at Kingston being up 6-2 and rolling out their first unit power play with a two man advantage and less than a minute to play in the game.

Kingston player made a fool of himself celebrating a completely meaningless goal to make it 7-2 with four seconds remaining.
If that was game 50 of the season I’d say totally uncalled for but that fact that it’s game 1 and they probably have only had practice reps with a 5 on 3 I’m fine with it. You also want your powerplay feeling good to start off the season

It's interesting to me that in a world where 95% teams run 4F1D on the power play, the Petes rolled out five forwards on the first unit than 3F2D on the second. What's the opposite of innovation? I don't think there is a true PP QB on this team, so I sort of understand why they tried Aiden Young there but I think he'll get picked apart for chances the other way like he was tonight if they keep that long term.

I'll bet Cameron is in that position sooner than later, even if he doesn't have the best shot or is the best passer, he's just your best overall player at the point and he can facilitate things enough to make it work and not get burnt the other way (reminds me of the Leafs trying to replace Morgan Rielly on PP1 every single year but he inevitably gets it back just by making smart, simple plays and not getting burnt/being smart enough to recover defensively if he does).

The penalties killed the Petes anytime they got any momentum going. It was just a non stop parade. That's kind of been a thing throughout the Wilson era and having Burchell in the stripes just makes everything worse. They weren't going to win anyway but the moments where you thought "maybe?" were just immediately stifled by either a meathead penalty (team takes the personality of the coach) or a somewhat marginal one (Burchell...) The 4th and 5th goals in particular just took all the life out of the game. I did some work on my phone during a lot of the third.

I agree however I thought it was pretty funny celebrating up 7-2.. now if they were down 7-2 I’d have a different reaction lol

It was a classless move.

I was actually gone by this point but the game sheet tells me it was Luke McNamara, so it all makes sense now... though I can't imagine a world he's on their top PP, looks like it was a hybrid unit

Taylor - McCallum - McIntyre line -4 tonight... (the SHG and all three GA at even strength). I get that they had to match up against Battaglia/Hopkins/Soto but with last change at home, you'd think you could get a more defensive oriented line out against them (we really think Cado going to suddenly commit to shutting down the opponents #1 line?)

Was a hybrid unit. Rookie Adam Kelly was on it too and burns who is on pp2
I'm not sure if I'd even call it a hybrid unit - the first unit was on when they scored the first PP goal and was Pieniniemi, Uronen, Battaglia, Soto and Guindon.

The fact that McNamara did his little glove drag with 5 seconds left in the game after Hopkins scored a beauty and had no celly was tells you all you really need to know...

Partridge isn’t OHL caliber imo. Didn’t mind parish and levac at all tonight
Agree on point A but I'd like to see Cadorin in. Parish was around in the action quite a bit in limited minutes.

Yeah we're all dancing around it but let's just be real and say it, McNamara is an idiot.

This team is going too be God awful I'd we don't play some degree of defense. Was not on bowen at all was left out on an island by every defensive guy on the roster
Bowen was frequently out of position as well. He made some huge highlight reel saves for sure but there were also times where he wasn't set up squared at all and got fortunate.

McCaullum really needs to find that sweet spot between playing with an edge and crossing the line.
There is no doubt he's a very good player and his work ethic is going to take him places.
This team is no where near good enough being able to play with him in the box 6 minutes a game and there was 2 other clear missed calls so it could have been 10 mins easy.

Bowen is not good enough to face 40-50 shots a game like Stutzka did last season.
It's really going to be a tough season for him if they cannot get their discipline in check.

Off topic to the game but I think last night was the worst the concessions have ever been. I get that it was the first game but the staff didn't seem to have any idea what was on the new menu. I constantly saw people ordering food and the staff either not knowing how to punch it in or not knowing it even existed.

And for the returning food - they were constantly running out of pizza - at one point it was going to be 10 minutes til more arrived - and hot dogs and sausages as well. The craft beer corner was missing a lot of the... craft beer. They had to know it was a sell out. Most of the usual staff was missing as well, at least on the east side. It was still lined up to the back doors on that side as the 2nd period started.

The people sitting beside me resorted to using the new app to order for pickup - which then meant they had to leave like 7 minutes into the period to go pick up their food.

In case there was any doubt about how hilariously steep the gap is between the OHL and OJHL, Quinn Binnie has 10 points in 6 games as was named captain of the Pickering Panthers.

And truly, good for him, you can never question the effort he put in here.
not a Petes fan but I have a ton of respect Binnie. No joke he might be the hardest working player I’ve ever seen in the OHL. Never once saw him take a shift off, it’s just a shame he doesn’t have much skill at this level. But yeah the OJ isn’t a very good league anymore, it’s essentially just U18 AAA for older players.

Peterborough would go 68-0. Trenton's leading scorers are all guys who were taken in like the 12th round and never made it or played 50 some games, put up 3 points and then got cut. Like Binnie (who doesn't deserve to catch strays here but it's extremely telling that he has 10 points in 6 games in the OJHL after putting up 4 in 103 games in the OHL).

And it's not like those OJHL teams are full of guys waiting to go to US schools. If they were good enough to play in the OHL, they would be playing in the OHL, as many tried and failed to do.

I honestly don't know what to do with such an unbelievably bad take other than assume it comes from someone with an axe to grind against the OHL or played in the OJHL and "is sure they could have made it" in the O.
Yeah a guy like Caedon Taylor would be the best player in the OJ by a wide margin, and while he’s a good young player, he’s not even top 20 in the OHL.

Taylor has a lot of talent and an unreal shot, but he’s too lazy off the puck. So many times they got caught three deep and left the D hung out to dry. Kingston had too many 3 on 2’s and 4 on 2’s, attacking the zone with speed and the D couldn’t keep a tight gap with no forward back pressure.
