Catching some, Ike: Countdown to D-Day before the game while channel flipping. Saw this several years ago and now I watch it whenever it's on.

My stepdad served in Vietnam, during the early years of the war. Never talks about it other than to say war is hell. We watched We Were Soldiers just after it came out in the eraly 2000's. He said that movie was the most accurate that he's seen.

If you don't know what war is like ... be thankful. Service has a lot of laughs, even more boredom, but the bad days are more than most of us will ever burden civilians with.

The Canadian monument just outside Ypres is in the area of the first chemical attacks of WWI .. chlorine clouds. The Menin Gate in Ypres has the names of over 58,000 servicemembers that they couldn't find in the mud and holes. Every night the town still has a ceremony.

The plus side is that those who served have an immortal brotherhood. Shared experiences ... the ability to share things that nobody else could understand ... good and bad.

Different war, different body count, but DH Hill's "it wasn't war, it was murder" became increasingly appropriate for a lot of succeeding battles and conflicts.

Probably the first that had guys involved that wanted to get it right. Obviously the ending was made up but as Galloway said, you gotta let Hollywood do their thing a little bit or it won't ever get made.

I'll look into the Countdown to D-Day.
