Good move. If he struggles, and proves this year was a fluke, no big deal. If he plays well then he will get a new contract but he will still be a RFA

I think the one year deal is probably for the fact that he hasn't played a whole NHL season yet, and they didn't wanna give him a one way deal for multi years just yet. That's just what I'm thinking personally.

It could also be a really cheap deal, and they're gonna give him a year to play a full season before giving him a more significant raise than what he had on his entry level contract.

We really like him. Advertised as a playmaker, but has a really good shot. I don't think anybody on the team this year other than Kovalchuk really had the shot he did. Maybe Clarkson a couple times early in the season. Or Zajac once in a very long while.
