Which is funny because if I remember right when Sullivan took over he was more open than Johnston to using young guys. Kuhn, Rust, Sheary, Wilson all got shots. Guentzel and Murray the next year.
i think thats because he coached them all in wbs. so they were players that he knew well. imo

Sully's time for an Adams has passed. Just by his lineup decisions you can see he's afraid to change his habits.

Every single one of the Cup guys was making significant noise in WBS before getting called up. Some went back and forth before sticking, including Rust and Guentzel.

Name one WBS player the last few years whose play really suggests they deserve a long NHL look.

POJ and Ty Smith are it.

Neither Rust or Kuhn were really lighting it up in the AHL. I get he was familiar with them though and that probably contributed.

Rust had 27 points in 43 AHL games in WBS in 2014-15 and was envisioned in a bottom six role. He was doing everything they asked and got called up for his NHL debut in the 2014-15 season. He had earned it before Sullivan was even in the Penguins organization.

Kuhnhackl had 15 points in 23 games before getting the call. Again, he was playing well in a bottom six role.

The guys producing now in WBS either don't play a style that translates to bottom six forward in the NHL or have been largely invisible when given a brief NHL chance.

Nylander and Puustinen are not bottom six guys. DOC has done nothing with 37 NHL games. And the game has looked too fast for Hallander when he's been in at the NHL level.

It's not just production, but whether they can play at the pace of the NHL physically and mentally.

Pens have the look of a badly coached team. Sully just is moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. Hextall is a no show here as to not forcing changes on sully. NO coach plays Dumo here. No coach keeps fresh legs on the bench and plays all the 35 year old guys on a back to back to boot. Inexcusable. But sullivan is a favorite of the Boston bean counters and gave him a three year ride. It won't matter as they already have the 3 year plan of Rust, Letang, Malkin and Rakell to sell tickets as if losing is not that critical. Team will draw 14 K in March unless Hextall actually makes a couple smart moves here. First is move Dumo tonight. Second get a physical LD. Third get what you can for Kap. Put Carter on RW and see if his defensive liability can be limited.

Not sure why people want us to move Kapanen.

Would be pretty swell to have a young 1B like Filip Gustavsson on the roster. **** Derrick Brassard and JR for such an unnecessary error.

On paper, the Brassard deal was fine, in practice it sucked. But man, that should have been a real canary in the coal mine moment when Brassard shat the bed that messily, especially when it started coming out how the organization was so weird about the 3C position and coaching problems.

He's right about hurting feelings. Its nice and all the organization shows loyalty to players but sometimes you have to enforce accountability when necessary.
Enforcing accountability arbitrarily and selectively is worse than not enforcing it at all. This shouldn't be some weird hack, this is like the very basic idea of leadership going back to the Bronze Age.

As I see it, there's two related problems: vets who should be held accountable are not, and younger players who play well are not rewarded for it, but are instead punished for slight infractions or no visible infractions at all. I ain't no Jkac Q. Admas or nothing, but that seems like a relatively easy problem to fix if you want to fix it.

What Hextall did in Philly was slow to make the changes to fix the roster. He was just in the development stage which is never a good thing in flyer land. I think he just lacks the gravitas to be a GM who will make the deals necessary to win. Yes he cash strapped the cap with a couple horrendous signings. Yet I give him credit for working the numbers to retain Letang, Malkin, Rust and add Rakell. But now he has to fix what he missed on. Secondly, he has to tell Sully he will move his favorites if they are not good enough. One way or another Dumo has to go. Please do not sign Zucker for 5 million. He has a nice niche here but Pens need a bigger stronger LW ala Malone for grit and bang. Sully will not play bangers and that has to change.

Looking at the roster, here's who's actually movable going into Tradesmas (or whatever the f*** TSN is calling it these days):

Jake - 12 team NTC
Zucker - 10 team NTC
Dumoulin - 10 team NTC
Rackell - 8 team NTC
Pettersson - freely available
POJ - freely available
Rutta - freely available
Ruhwehdel - freely available
Freidman - freely availabe
Kapanen - freely available
McGinn - freely available
Blueger - freely available
Heinen - freely available

DOC, Caigula, etc. - Whatever, who cares

UNMOVABLE:
Sid - NMC
Rust - NMC
Geno - NMC, 35+
Letang - NMC, 35+
Carter - NMC, 35+
Petry - NMC, NTC

So, that's what we're working with essentially. Prospects are the worst in the league, our 2023 picks aren't going to be super high either.

Again, not a lot of options for changing up the roster. The players without NMCs/NTCs (god that Carter NMC plus the poison pill loading of the contract plus Dumo's NTC are brutal) are by and large worthless/valueless except for maybe as a sweetener or a like-for-like swap. The only real player(s) who might have some value on the trade market might be Jake, or Zucker for the forwards and Pettersson or POJ on the defense. OR we might convince someone like Rust or Carter to waive the NMC, but I doubt that's going to happen.
