Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Actual rational thought
Surprising for once.
The only time I hope what Eklund says is true is,…

Letang and Penguins Closing in on 3 year/22M+ Deal.

Source: Eklund
Id be happy with that, but its Eklund.
At $4.1M is there a better option/cap hit for Line 2? Gun to my head my preference is still signing Rakell but if that ship sails this might be another option, and a way to move out a d-man in one fell swoop.

Obviously Wheeler is 35 years old but the period to win is the next 2-3 years anyway. Wheeler is still producing at ppg pace and I'd love to see a winger of his size on Geno's line.

Idk, i just think it beats xxxxx-Geno-xxxxxx.
Wheeler would be a good fit. Gritty, leadership, good shot. 4.1mil would be a steal.

Come home MAF!!!!!

Edit: Noo.....

What is going on

6 years for Letang is complete yuck unless the cap number starts with a 5. Id do 4 years for Geno if its cheap.
I know Geno has a lot of milleage, but if you are willing to go 6 years for Letang, just give Geno his 4 at a reduced cap hit.

At this point, you sink or swim with those guys anyway and, if it does not work, you rebuild.
Right?! Only like 6 years of Letang if his cap starts with a 5 though.

But 6 years won't be what it takes. 6 years would be massaging the cap number to make it a bit more favorable. I'm willing to do that to an extent, but 6 years for a 35 year old player is beyond that IMO.

Like I said last page, $7.5 million a year for 4 years or $7 million a year for 5 years is what I'd do. Beyond that, I think you're getting a bit too wild.
Does it matter in the end? We will be hot garbage for the final two years of any 6 year deal for Letang, so him being overpaid at that point isn't going to affect much. He won't stop a tank, and if he's still playing well enough to, the Pens will probably be able to trade him at that point to a team that is contending.

I think the key here is to avoid getting too many long term deals for roleplayers/mid tier guys. Make sure there's enough cap flexibility so that when the rebuild does start the team can still find a direction.

But I don't think signing a key guy to a deal that's a little too long is a problem

I’m guessing the hold up with both is figuring the balance out with this. I don’t believe Rossi for a second, but there are a lot of factors and details in every contract.

IF Rossi is right then I think it’s pretty obvious they aren’t all that serious about bringing Geno back. They would be willing to go 6 years for Letang but not 4 for Geno. That makes it pretty obvious to me. They don’t want him back…IF Rossi is right

Rossi is probably a Malkin mouthpiece on this.

If the fanbase is angry about the news of the team not willing to go 4 years, it puts pressure on management. PR 101.

I don't think Malkin has that much sway with the fanbase at this point. In corners like here yeah.

He does have sway with Sid though. And probably is the right option depending on price.

One possibility if Rossi is right is that they're exploring the idea of giving Letang a lot of term to bring his cap down, so they can give Geno a bit more (while still getting them under 14m) without going to 4 years.

It certainly feels like there's some jiggery pokery going on given how long we've between told Hextall and Letang are nearly there without the breakthrough.

The vocal minority is all that is needed to put pressure on management.

I do agree that Sid is probably putting pressure on the team to keep Letang and Malkin both.

I heard it was more hokey pokey but they’ll turn it around.

Honestly I doubt it.

I don't really think management feels pressure from fan sentiment. I also think, particularly in the case of Malkin, there are voices in there that are questioning his go-forward value to this team.

I do not think Hextall or Burke feel pressure from the fanbase, but ownership does. Well, maybe this new ownership group does not because they do not care about the market. I am sure Mario did feel fan pressure.

Okay, but I’ll say this: this board plays it fast and loose with “Sid is demanding this person be signed and this person on his line,“ well, Sid and Geno are best friends and I promise you Sid would rather have Geno re-signed than Letang (not that he doesn’t want 58 back). So if Geno doesn’t return, that narrative needs to be 6-feet under.
