Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Yes, the Pens could be in on Fleury if they’re planning to deal Jarry if a deal they like falls in place…maybe they don’t want to pay his next contract which is completely understandable to me…if that’s the case, they need to move him at least by the TDL next year
Yes let's leave the most important position vulnerable to save money for wingers.

But let’s say Fleury wants 2 years at the same cap hit, $3.5 M…and someone out there is willing to pay a very good first round pick or top player for Jarry…if the team doesn’t want to sign Jarry to a long term deal at over $5M because our contending time is only 3 years, are you saying you wouldn’t trade Jarry? Because I would…
I wouldn't, no.

We can't even talk to Fleury until free agency opens. What if he doesn't want to sign here? Or wants an unreasonable amount of money or term? We could move Jarry at the draft and then be left with nothing when free agency opens.

Even if we could get Maf, we're also talking about a goalie who traditionally relies on athleticism but who is now old.

It just seems risky on so many levels.

No way on six years for Letang…it’s great he thinks he’s going to be playing that long, but that’s just stupid…if you can’t get a 3 or 4 year deal with him done at no more than $8 AAV, then move on….

I don't follow the draft but who other than Cooley is exciting for us? That's like top 4 at worst, right?
There's a lot of intriguing players that could be available at 21 but it's really hard to project who will be there with any certainty. Cooley won't be anywhere near where we pick though.

It's hard to even say what Hextall's philosophy will be yet with the draft.

They'd probably be looking for Marino if they retain 50% on Wheeler.

But value wise I think Winnipeg would need to add more to the pot, even with that retention so maybe they'd take Zucker in that deal
I was thinking zero retention. We send about $9 million and take back Wheeler's $8+ million. Gives us a legit top-six winger and opens a roster spot for Joseph. Possibly even Poulin instead of Zucker.

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Poulin-Malkin-Wheeler

Joseph-Letang
Pettersson/Matheson-Marino

I would even prefer Poulin-Crosby-Wheeler but Sullivan...

Maf is starting to approach Jagr watch territory.
I have tears in my eyes.

Exactly, the only way that makes sense for us is either a high return on Jarry (who would be a rental, so doubtful) or Fleury taking league minimum to play here which is also doubtful, the UFA goalie market is sparse and he could easily get $5M out there.

Pretty sure LeBrun just missed the CDS signing altogether
He said Possibly

If you can get Fleury signed for like 3 years at $4 million a year, he'd only be marginally more expensive than Jarry this year and he'd be cheaper than Jarry in the next 2 years.
What do you think a package deal of Jarry + Poulin + 21st OA pick would get?

I would not mind Fleury back for 2-3 years at 4 mil per year

But Flower might come cheaper, and Jarry won't be cheaper in a year, and Jarry doesn't have a good playoff record, and Jarry would bring back a useful asset.

I don't really believe it's happening but the logic is easy to see.

The other possibility is they'd move DeSmith within days of resigning, which is unusual to say the least but I'm sure it's happened before...
They could make it work, but it just seems like such a bold move to make and carries enough risk that I can't see a notoriously conservative gm like Ron Hextall doing that.

I'm not so sure that even a bold gm like JR would move a young goalie, replace them with a 37 year old, and do all of that while not even knowing if the 37 year old will sign here prior to making the trade.

And if you go the route of signing Maf first and then making a trade, then you have to wait until after the draft to do that and teams will have less appetite to make moves at that point and you won't know what type of draft pick you'll be getting in terms of where it will slot in the first

I just think there's too many unknowns to make this anything more than an extreme long shot at happening at best

I am 100% on board with LTIRetirement for Letang and Geno from bone-itis or whatever shit made Hossa allergic to hockey gear.

Average down those AAVs and sign Forsberg too!

you assume teams adhere to the “no talking until July 13” rule….I, on the other hand, dont think NHL GMs and agents are that honorable lol…
