Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Forsberg isn't coming in at $7.5 million. He wants in the high $8 million range from Tennessee, a low COL state with no state income taxes, on an 8 year deal. To match that, you'd need to be offering basically $10 million a year for him to come to Pittsburgh. Otherwise, it makes more sense for him to just stay in Nashville.

I should have been more specific. Once he signs Trocheck to replace Malkin is what I meant

But they can do that without clearing out cap though.

The idea that POJ can replace Dumoulin is a pretty bad take at this point

Direct one-for-one replacement? No. POJ got a legit audition for an NHL spot just last season and blew it... hard.

But I think they could figure things out fairly easily without Dumo. He's been really uneven the last handful of seasons and at his age and with some of his injuries he's the type of defenseman that goes down the crapper fast.

Yeah I agree, but at the same point, you don't really have anyone else on the team that has shown to be able to handle Dumoulin's role. Dumoulin being mediocre against tough competition can't necessarily be replaced by someone performing well against easy competition just because they performed better.

They should just move on from Pettersson, see if POJ can handle Pettersson's full role (and maybe gradually bump up the difficulty if he shows he can handle it), and then reevaluate the Dumoulin situation after next year.

I tend to think the difficulty of his role gets a bit undersold at times. I'm a fan.

It's just that I don't want them to end up with another Scuderi. Your plan probably wise... I just hope they don't lose their marbles and try to extend him.

I wouldn't say that. He did pretty well in a handful of games and even became Letang's partner for a short stint. Then the wheels began to come off but then again, that was his first stint in the NHL and, believe it or not, it takes time to develop some players. I don't think he blew it at all. I think he's a legitimate bottom pairing option for us, especially when there's an injury. He could easily elevate above that too.

Don't misunderstand... I actually think POJ has a lot of promise. While he didn't make it happen in the NHL last year he was one of WB/S most dynamic players. And it just takes young defensemen time to put things together. I still think he has second pairing potential and could be ready to step in as soon as next season in some capacity. But maybe best to take it slow. He's not a blue chip guy but has an intriguing skillset and frame so people should be patient.

Not so sure DOC can replace Mcginn either.

Ryan Wilson gets so close to the mark and yet so far sometimes.

I would be 100% okay letting McGinn go and having DOC replace him. I think DOC, if given the right opportunity and support, could become a major roster player in the coming years. I really liked his play early in the season when he was 2/3C. I just hope they don't neuter him on the 4th line.

POJ is not replacing top pairing minutes with Letang that Dumoulin brings. The gap between DOC and McGinn is A LOT smaller than the gap between POJ and Dumoulin today. That could change obviously.

Wouldn't it make sense to announce the Letang extension tomorrow with more media and such? Pretty sure the team wants to get a bigger ''pop''.

Eh I don't really see much of an issue with that one.

McGinn's role isn't important enough for me to question if O'Connor could replace him.
DOC's offensive contributions don't inspire confidence in me that he'd replace Mcginn's offense.

The pking...sure.

Not sure why you’d sign Carter if you have no intention of signing G. At least he’s still highly productive when playing.

His hit just needs to align with age and availability.

Get rid of all of Kap, Zuck, and Petts, re-sign Malkin and Letang, sign Forsberg, profit.

McGinn is kind of the very definition of a luxury on this team.
Indeed. For me, the honeymoon on McGinn is over. I think everyone here was absolutely ga-ga over him because he didn't have the contract length that Tanev did while providing a similar service. Now that I don't give a good god damn f*** about Tanev, I'm focusing more on McGinn, and when you take the rose-colored glasses off, there are mixed reviews about his play and value to the team.

I think if you gave DOC every minute in every situation that McGinn had, you'd see similar numbers. Or at worst, number commensurable to the relative cost of each player. Meaning, that you may see a few points from DOC, but it's coming from a much smaller contract/cap hit.

The DOG confirms it!

Hextall hates the camera.
It's good PR though, and they want as many eyeballs on it as possible. Beyond the draft and the 1st day of free agency the summer is rather mundane. Be shocked if it's not a done deal already and just wanting to announce it tomorrow or even later tonight.

RH is very conservative, for him to even suggest they're close tells me it's pretty much in duh bag.

I like DOC and think he has some potential but he's to some work to do if he's gonna outproduce McGinn. He's not there yet.
