Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I'm curious for what these "few details" that Hextall and Letang are working through at this point. You usually don't see contracts being held as "super close" for as long as Letang and the Penguins have allegedly been "super close", and I'm not really sure what movement really needs to happen at this point to get a deal done.

You'd think that if they were that close, they'd just say "screw it, let's get it done". It's probably just Hextall leveraging all of the time he has to get as good of a deal for the team as he can, but it's still odd to basically come out and say "yeah we're super close, it will be done in a day or two".
No trade clause?

It is kind of confusing. Negotiating performace bonuses, maybe?

Also, the optimist in me is thinking Malkin's so unselfish, he bascially told Hextall "figure out Letang, then come back to me and I'll take whatever reasonably is left". Because the lack of news surrounding him is fascinating.

No prominent unrestricted free agents have been re-signed. Why are we holding Hextall to a higher standard?

I mean who's holding Hextall to a higher standard? All I'm saying is that I find it odd for how long the Penguins and Letang have seemingly been "close".

No trade clause?

Yeah I could see this being it. Maybe it's a 4 or 5 year deal where Hextall wants Letang to have no trade protection in the last year, while Letang wants a NTC in his last year.

Rust's deal had something similar, he had a full NMC for the first 3 years and no trade protection in the last 3 years. Maybe Letang is getting offered that full NMC in the first 3 years, but the hold-up is the trade protection in year 4 or maybe even year 5.

That’s oddly very specific

I was referring more to posts like Flying Dego's and the mindset that Hextall has been sleeping again. It's not just here. Other forums and social media, too.

It's just like when people whine about a lack of trades in December or January, yet the entire league has held firm.

"I'll sign for X, sure, but only if you get Geno back too"

Exactly, he's not JR or even RS, he's not as transparent or forthcoming. And the masses here have a tough time in being patient. NOTHING needs to be done to this point! That's about to change. Which is why we should just wait until the end of next week before we jump from the Westinghouse bridge.

"I'll sign for X, sure, but only if you get Geno back too"

That would be a pretty awful strategy to try to get Malkin signed

Letang getting under contract and having that information finalized will make the path towards signing Malkin way easier. It's easier to negotiate with Malkin when you can say "we have X amount of money, this is what we can pay you" instead of "we have X amount of money to pay you and Letang, so we have to figure out how to balance that".

Letang is known for many things, being smart is not one of them.

Theoretically they could have a final contract drawn up that Letang agrees with, but he doesn't sign it until Malkin's contract is done.

I'm hoping Hextall's order of operation this weekend goes:

1. Get Letang signed before round 1 starts
2. Focus on what you want to do with the 1st round pick once round 1 starts (whether that's trade it, use it, trade down or whatever)
3. Spend day 2 of the draft focusing mostly on clearing out money with Pettersson and/or Zucker
4. Shift the focus entirely to Malkin and Rakell after day 2 of the draft

I just hope he takes the advice of scouts this time.

Where does "Trade up to 4OV" fit in?

I'm hoping they trade down if anything.

Montreal's trying to get stupid with the draft to get another top-10 pick. With pick #21, you could get a package of picks #33, #62 and #66. With picks #21 and #26, Montreal can likely get to around #8.

If there's one thing Hextall is decent at, it's trading down for multiple picks.

I would also be targeting of the few teams that has an embarrassment of riches in the 2nd round to trade Zucker and/or Pettersson to. Like Arizona for 67 or Seattle for 68. Possibly Detroit at 52 or even 73 and a later pick.

Pulling 2 2nds and 2 3rd for our 1st/Zuck/Petts and gaining all that cap space, wouldn't be bad.

That wouldn't be "not bad" it would be downright miraculous.

Who cares about some bottom-rung first rounder? I mean sure some of the Russian value picks intrigue me somewhat but that comes with a whole other set of potential headaches. If this team is truly still competing or whatever these are the kind of moves you make, IMO.

EDIT: I guess I don't get the resistance by so many to attach a second rounder to Zucker/MP/whoever just to move them along without much/any cap pain.

It’s going to be great watching Hextall make all of those moves to she cap space and then use it to sign Trocheck. Can’t wait

Why is that a bad thing?

Trocheck is a problem if you're signing him to replace Malkin. Trocheck is an amazing addition if you're signing him to play with Malkin.
