If you pay your money, you have the right to boo. That’s the expression, right? Yet it was surprising the Pittsburgh Penguins were the recipient of hometown boos Tuesday despite being in a close game with the Colorado Avalanche. The Penguins eventually faltered late, including some wasted power...

I will admit I didn't read the article, but this headline pissed me off. How f***ing stupid are these people? We aren't sick of the core. We're sick of boring hockey. We're sick of blowing multi-goal leads. We're sick of the lineup decisions. We're sick of ownership sitting back pretending everything is OK. We're sick of the COACH. WE'RE SICK OF LOSING.
These idiots really think that just because we love Sid, Geno, and Letang that we are going to part with our hard earned money to go be bored for 3 hours and watch them lose on a weekday? This is Pirates level shit. We have Jason Kendall, everyone loves him right? What Jason Bay, he's pretty good. Cutch is back, remember the good ole days?
I think there are several ways to look at this. First, I think we need to distinguish the groups of "fans". If you take the time to come here, read, and respond, you probably have more general hockey knowledge and Penguins knowledge than the majority of the fans that attend the games. So there's an upper echelon of fans that have a greater awareness of the team, the issues, and what can be done. Next down are fans that likely go and watch games, understand hockey, but maybe aren't super knowledgeable about things like coaching systems, prospect development, quality of each player on the ice, etc. Then you have people that show up and watch because they like hockey but really have no idea about any of the above. All they know is Crosby is the best player in the league and that means he should always be able to score goals and that the Penguins should always win because, well, that's what they always do so why would it change?
I think there are fans that don't want to see our heroes struggle. It's like watching your mom or dad get old, or watching your dog struggle to stand up. You love them and you always want to think about them in the best light so when there are struggles, it's hard to internalize which breeds anger. I don't think they are mad at Sid, Geno, or Letang individually. I think they are mad because deep down they know these guys are old and slowing down and they are no longer the talented powerhouse they were ten years ago, and they don't want that for them. Like honestly, who doesn't want good things for Sid, Geno, or Letang? I do.
Then there are fans like us here on the board who loathe Sullivan and understand the harsh impacts of a stale coaching system. And we know that FSG's infatuation with him is likely holding back the opportunity to breathe new life into the twilight of the core's career.
One aspect that I think in common in the fans, the team, and the front office that is a complete and utter detriment in times like this is the loyalty card. There is zero doubt that the fans in Pittsburgh tend to prioritize love of player over all else. Never forget, there was a lady with a sign that said "We want Fleury" even though Murray was able to carry the team to a Cup. So keeping guys even though it's not in the overall best interest of the team has longer-term consequences. We maybe shouldn't have given Letang the 6-year deal. We probably should have been willing to walk away from Jarry. Rust should probably have been traded off at some point. Sullivan should have been gone 4 years ago. This fierce loyalty can hurt a franchise. But...that is what this franchise has deemed important. That's part of the culture that has been created. That vision/value is not necessarily a bad thing until is yields bad situations, like Sullivan.
I'm not sick of the core. I still love Sid, Geno, and Letang and am generally happy they are still here for another 1-2 years after this. What I AM sick of is the Sullivan system of hockey that breeds the same shit hockey game in and game out where a win is the direct result of the players collectively overcoming it. I am sick of the non-impact players on the roster. I would rather they play youth. I am sick of the relative lack of movement to spark this team. Rotating Kevin f***ing Hayes and Matt f***ing Nieto while benching Puljujarvi is the type of long-term shit I'm sick of. And that has nothing to do with the core. Now, if you're winning games, you can mask those frustrations. I hated Adams and Glass but we were also a dominant team in the league so it was easier to digest. At this point, when you're a bottom 10 team, shit like that gets harder to hide.
