Though I will say; if Jiricek is unhappy with the Jackets because of a lack of opportunity and development on the organization's part, and the Jackets are unhappy with his stagnation as a prospect, I don't think this team's the best landing spot for the kid.

Maybe there's a shift in approach as Dubas spends the next 9 months getting a lot younger or whatever, but if Sully's still here after the RS, I think all prospects are just kinda at a dead end.

Sportsnet's Chris Johnston is saying this is all coming from a disconnect between Jiricek and the Jackets. Where he thinks he should be given more of an opportunity and the team's still kinda waiting for him to show more before they commit to giving him a permanent spot in the NHL. The cliche "player wants a fresh start" situation. FWIW
Yeah, he'd LOVE a trade to the Penguins, then.

Assumption: Top 5 pick, take Misa.

Are we better off with:

McGroarty, Misa
Pickering, Brunicke

or

Misa
Pickering, Brunicke, Jiricek

I would assume the deal is around McGroarty and maybe a small plus. I can't imagine there will be a big package deal.
Probably a goalie.

What if we just unload the non-first picks Dubas has accumulated? Two 2nds and a third and 2 5ths or something goofy like that. Recoup some later when you trade Pettersson/Rakell/DOC whoever, and then before you start picking up lottery picks you got Jiricek, McGroarty, Blomqvist, Pickering, Broz, and Koivunen all potentially ready when they come in.

I honestly think Jiricek would be playing for the Penguins immediately just because the only competition for the 3rd pair RD spot is St. Ivany. I figure that Pettersson gets traded really soon and they end up with Graves, Grzelcyk and Pickering on LD and Letang, Karlsson and Jiricek on RD.

Why would Columbus trade a prospect of Jiricek's caliber for a couple of 2nd rounders?

I imagine if they are bringing in Jiricek at a heavy cost they are planning to move on from Letang or EK65.

That would be awesome but I don't think many/any other GMs care nearly as much about a quantity of questionable-value picks as much as Dubas does.

Well except for maybe Penguins FANS. Suddenly.

The Pens could give them realistically something like three 2nd rounders and another pick without hurting the draft too bad. That's a lot of capital.

Johnston says the Jackets have basically decided it's time to move on from Jiricek after the disconnect between the player and organization on where he is and where he should be.

Says that initially, the team wanted a premium prospect of Jiricek's caliber coming back, but as things drag on, the feel is that a "significant thing has happened here" where they're at a point where they'd be more open to a lesser package of picks/prospects or a pick/prospect plus a roster blueliner.

I don't think Petts really fits unless they love him as a bottom pairing guy and value somebody like Larsson as an up and coming goalie prospect.

We'll see how it goes. Johnston closes by saying time is of the essence and that Jiricek is not happy being relegated to the AHL.

I hope that's the plan, with Karlsson being the preference. Next year you can run Letang, Jiricek, and Brunicke down the right side. Just means we need work on the left side but those guys are a bit easier to find I think.

All we need is to bring in another below average skater into fold, especially if it costs another young prospect or high draft pick…tired of the whole skating thing…get some better skaters to invest time and resources in, Dubas…lol

This is about Poulin but point holds…

I think people may be shocked by how little he returns.

Probably a comparable city to Pittsburgh and the future is honestly really bright with their prospects

If a top prospect was on the table I think it'd be done. It's not like Columbus is probably alone in their opinion of him not being ready, I'm sure other teams have taken that into account too.

Columbus is a really good city honestly. I'm just going by what players have historically preferred haha.

I think it's almost guaranteed that Karlsson gets traded next off-season after his signing bonus. I'd be shocked for him to still be on the team to open the 2025 season.

The Penguins can retain 50% of his deal while it only costs them like $5 million in real money.

I’d prefer we trade Letang tbh. EK65 is about the only consistent offensive driver every night at this point left in the roster with Sid and Geno aging out.

I don't think Letang gives you any value while Karlsson would give you value if you traded him.

I'd guess their D pairs next year would look like:

Pickering-Letang
Veteran LD-Jiricek
Graves-St. Ivany

Brunicke would really have to knock their socks off for me to think he'd start in the NHL.

If the Pens could snag Jiricek for something like Petts+Larsson, I'm all for giving it a shot. I don't think this is an organization he'd blossom in and I think you have to be mindful of how a coach like Sullivan is going to view him. I'd still be hesitant to part with someone like McG or Brunicke because, again, this needs to be a building stage for the team, not simply swapping guys around. I'm still a bit bummed they couldn't get something done for McG without trading Yager--though I don't think either guy is really super important or a building block.

Fingers crossed that vaunted Columbus ineptitude comes into play again and this team lucks into a good prospect for cheap. Still have to deal with that Sullivan hurdle though.

I do think it's technically possible to pull off Jiricek without including McGroarty, but I just find it so wildly unlikely that I don't even consider it reasonable. It would require a level of aggressiveness and savvy that I don't think Dubas has shown.

You'd basically have to get a 1st for Pettersson and immediately package that with more picks and prospects to have a chance at getting him. Does Blomqvist, Vancouver's 1st (let's pretend Vancouver is the one trading for MP) and Pittsburgh's 2026 2nd get it done? That's likely pick #25, pick #40 next year and a NHL ready goalie prospect for Jiricek.

But at that point, why wouldn't Vancouver just offer their 1st, 2nd and a B prospect for Jiricek? They want him as well.

Is it really in Sullivan's system? They've had plenty of mediocre skating defensemen work in Sullivan's system but not really as many mediocre skating wingers.
My comment wasn't even about Sullivan though. Only a passing thought about bigger defensemen who can't turn fast enough.

It may not even be an issue with the kid. OR in all likely hood we don't land him anyways so it's all a moot point.

I dunno. I know nobody's Bobby Mac nowadays, but Johnston's little segment about how the team's probably relenting on their demands, coupled with the angst between organization and player, I kinda do wonder if it's gonna be a situation where Jiricek's dealt for less than we expect in the end.

Lotta moving parts and all that. I think you have to factor in the Jackets-Penguins thing too. Columbus isn't known for their FO savvy as an org or anything but you have to imagine they would prefer to avoid the potential egg on their face should Jiricek blossom on a divisional "rival."

I mean to be fair this applies to literally every important aspect of attempting this supposed rebuild everyone is so eager for.
Anybody that thinks this team's genuinely begun the rebuild is goofy. It's all in suspended animation until the golden boy Sid gets his final Olympics before riding off into the sunset. /shrug
