It's kind of a bummer overall that we've reached this special level of pessimism where they make a pretty decent trade with fair potential to be a solid W and no one gives a shit because we know how it will likely result.
It's only a W if they end up flipping him for more than a 4th.
They certainly don't need him to help win games the next 5+ years.

And if people are right about the outcome, they're not being pessimistic. That's realism based on trends.

I personally think there's decent odds to flip him for a 3rd or better. 4ths are so low percentage that there's not much to fear there by losing one.

I mean, we're looking at minimum 2 weeks in the bottom 6 while he 'acclimates' himself to the team or whatever. It takes months, if not years, to learn Sullivan's "Hey, that guy's open I should cover him" system, so 2 weeks is really pushing it.

I mean unless it's Rust then he can be out for like a year and a half and slide right back on to the top line and 20ish minutes of TOI a night.

If he gets like one shift with Sid and Sid decides he likes playing with him, that'll keep him on Sid's line for months.

But, yeah, like BlindWilly is saying--with Sully around, the problem is getting that opportunity, and making the most of it.

I mean don't get me wrong if this kid can bump one of Bunting or Beau down the lineup I'll be ecstatic. It's hilarious to me that they are playing Raks on LW simply to deny Malkin any decent linemates. But is anyone confident of that happening?

I would be surprised if he doesn’t bump bunting or beau. Only way he doesn’t is if he doesn’t care… otherwise if he gives 100% he will be in the top 6. Agree, w Gurgenson on this one! In a funny way you just traded Ruhwedel for Tomasino…..

For a 2027 4th, it's good value. He's not a world-changing impact player but he's in the mold of what Dubas should be doing.

I ONLY support this if there are addition moves coming such as waiving 5 or so players.

I wonder what Tomasino was thinking when he got the call. Congrats Phil, you got traded and you're off the 5th worst team in the league....

Now you're on the the 3rd worst team in the league

Also this is the first time Sullivan has had a Phil to yell at in a long time. He must be excited

That's why I don't understand all the "L.O.L. the pick is in 3 years L.O.L." takes with Eller and whatnot. Who cares? Those picks still have value. If not now, they will get more and more value in the coming years. If other GM's don't think so, then take full advantage of that.

Tomasino would feel hopeful if Sullivan wasn't the coach and Tomasino is not a great skater, average at best. He's also not great away from the puck so this is funny as shit. We've seen how players like that do under Sullivan, who can't develop for shit. Glass hasn't fared well either.

Why are people down on Beauvillier? Dude signed a 1yr, 1.25mil deal and has 6 goals on the year which is 3rd on the team. Pacing for 20. All things considered, that isn't that bad. Not Mitch Marner but it's not like he has 1 assist in 11 gp.

Beau is fine-ish as a complimentary player for a much more talented wing opposite him.

You can see my issue, then. As an individual Beau is OK for what he is and on a good deal.

Whatever else may be said, this is incredible value to get essentially for free.

Tomasino was a favourite of mine in his draft year and justified it by ripping up the OHL in his D+1 and performing exceptionally well in the AHL in his D+2, going over P/GP as a new pro. I had him as a top 20 prospect at that point. He followed that up with a very respectable rookie year, but the last two seasons he has stalled - while still playing well, with very good /60 rates - as Nashville has adamantly refused to recognize he is a guy who needs top-6 and PP time. They’ve dicked around sending him back and forth between the NHL and AHL, never giving him a proper shot even as he produced well.

Let’s not make the same mistake here. Call me a laughable optimist, but I maintain that this kid could be a Guentzel if we give him the chance - and we have absolutely f*** all to lose in doing so. Tomasino just turned 23 this summer, same as Guentzel when he broke through for us.

Puustinen sucks anyway so I think it’s an easy decision to replace him with Tomasino.

They just shouldn’t be making the swap that easy. Get creative and do something like:

Beauvillier-Crosby-Rakell
Tomasino-Malkin-Puljujarvi
Bunting-O’Connor-Rust

When the Pens got Glass, I had this article saved and posted it before.

It has stuff about Tomasino too and this dates back to 2022-23.

When Brunette was asked about it the other day, he mentioned that while Tomasino was looking good in Milwaukee, a lot of his issues were related to work ethic. That is not surprising with how mysterious things have been with him, but it is not encouraging either, as that is more personality-related and is not a talent or experience problem that can be developed.
Tomasino especially has had years to get things figured out, and even played all but six games of a full year as a rookie in 2021-22. It has only gone downhill for him since then, and blame coaching all you want, but he has done no better for himself and Brunette's comments the other day all but confirm it is an issue with himself.
This part has been an issue for Tomasino for a few years and I don't see it changing under Sullivan in this shit show of a system and non existent development coaching with Sullivan.

Honestly I'd rather have kept that pick.

A player that has had work ethic issues for years in Nashville, is somewhat average at skating, isn't good defensively...

What a steal.

Do you have amnesia with the Penguins current state of affairs?

Tomasino is largely a RW.

I think the other thing with Tomasino is he plays that style Sullivan likes. I think it'll get him a little bit more rope than some of the other young players we have simliar to what we saw with McCann.

Issue is Tomasino is defensively deficient. Wonder how that goes over.
