Seriously, which would the board rather take a hit from? The forwards or the defense?

Guentzel-Crosby-Rakell
Zucker-Malkin-Rust
Heinen-Carter-Kapanen
McGinn-Blueger-Archibald
DOC-Poehling-Caggiula
Hallander-Poulin-Puustinen
Nylander-Gruden-Legare

Dumoulin-Letang
Pettersson-Petry
Smith-Rutta
POJ-Ruhwedel
Ouellett-Friedman
Fedun-Swoyer
St. Ivany

If they trade Blueger, they have a number of alternatives, beginning with Poehling.

If they lose two defensemen, it gets nasty in a hurry.

Why would the Penguins do this, though? POJ is better than Staal and miles better than Del Zotto.

I'd rather have POJ in Nachoville than Del Zotto a call away in WBS.

Because they don't really want POJ in Nachoville either. They want Friedman and Ruh there instead. He's had his shot to impress Hexturke, hasn't taken it, and now they want to trade him for a small return and move on. Right, wrong, that's how it is.

OK, let's say that's the case.

The Pens trade POJ to Florida for Del Zotto, who goes to WBS, and whatever else.

The Pens at that moment are still not cap compliant. They either have to go to 12 forwards to keep Ruhwedel and Friedman, or they have to waive one of the defensemen.

*shrugs* Burn that bridge when they get there, wanting or not wanting POJ has nothing to do with that.

I’m confused. I thought many HFBoards experts said Z would never get picked up if waived.

Hmmmmm

I sincerely look forward to the hindsight is 20/20, leave Hextall alone and Z was nothing more than a fourth liner, it that, posts.

Another bone head move by Hextall.

Just trading POJ does not necessarily protect the Penguins from losing Freidman or Ruhwedel, too.

Yes it does? You can run with 12 F and 8 D.

I'm substantially more concerned about D depth than F depth. Shoot Archibald into the sun to get cap compliant for all I care, I don't want to risk losing a defenseman to waivers if I don't have to.

It would be nice if we could get through training camp and have something look promising for once.

it ain’t good either way. It’s a pretty terrifically mediocre lineup, but I don’t think any of the depth options are good. Z was probably better than POJ in terms of ability in the position, Smith looks good compare to POJ mostly by virtue of not being POJ, but he’s younger and we spent assets to get him, so…

If you start the season with 12 F and 8 D, you run the risk of a forward suffering an injury significant enough to miss a game but not significant enough for LTIR...and not having the cap space to call up a replacement. Which means you have to run a game shorthanded.

It's bad cap management.

You'd have to run with 11 F and 7 D for 1 game and then you can use an emergency call-up. Not worth losing D depth for that minor of an issue.

OR

You could trade Blueger and still be able to keep 13F and 8D.

I feel like we're just glossing over the trade aspect that allows the Penguins to run a full 23-man roster.

Or you could wait until the inevitable LTIR injury that will happen when one of Rust, Zucker, Rakell, Malkin or Letang goes down, then you'll have plenty of cap space to do whatever you want.

I don't see running with a 22 man roster for likely under a month as much of an issue. I do see losing D depth as a potential issue, so I'd like to avoid that at all costs.

Just let POJ get claimed.

JJ is available as his replacement and at 35 he is the appropriate age to play here.
