Here would be the crux for a team starved for top 6 talent. Why sign a guy to a large and lengthy contract and then slot him on line 3 where he'll have less minutes/impact...

Now you alluded to what the correct coaching action would be:
Sid/Rakell
G/Rust

Will we get that. My magic ball says "ask again later"

Probably at some point. Injuries, loss of form, they'll get involved. We'll see most of the combos sooner or later.

I think we're also going to see more of L3 than most people here want too.

I mean you guys do you and fair enough. And I'm obviously just kinda goofing around considering these are essentially f***around lines. But if the team starts with a friggin Zucker/Malkin/Heinen L2 then yeah... that's really stupid to the point of seeming like punishment.

I can live with that. Were everyone else injured. Maybe lets try silliness like that when they HAVE to?

They ain't just goof around. I'm not sure they're opening day lineups, but I don't think the players dreamt them up by themselves.

That said... what do you want there? I think it's you saying "at least they're not forcing Kapanen back into the top 6". Well, that means one of those guys in the top 6, presumably with Geno. And when you figure both were legit better with Geno than Rakell was last season... *shrugs*

I keep saying the solution to getting L2 truly humming isn't even on the roster.

But as of right now I think they are WAY overthinking anything that doesn't involve Raks on L1 or L2. It's just trying to get way too cute.

Ehhhhh...

Look, you know I want Rakell on L1. But I don't think it's hugely overthinking things to keep Rust there.

Once they do that, I have seen nothing from Rakell with Geno that says that's a no-brainer. I don't get why people are seeing it that way, I don't see any cuteness there at all.

Maybe when Rakell gets his chance with Geno he'll make that look foolish but right now, nah.

I suspect you're right the solution to L2 isn't there - or if it is, it's Jeff Petry - but there we go. This is where we are.

I have some doubts about Raks... not gonna lie.

But I would absolutely not read into such a small sample size. And if they did I am truly mystified that they signed him for 5+ million to play on L3. That's just dumb.

This team is pretty much always missing a top six forward. Rakell might be L3 on paper but the only way he's not spending most of the season in the top six is if one of the guys behind him makes a massive step, or we are for once blessed with good health.

Or if he's the guy injured I guess.

If you say so buddy.

Tbf, there's been plenty that Hextall would like it to work out this way. The question is how committed they are if he's not really earning it, or if there is a 22 man roster and tough decisions to make. I still think there's a strong chance he'll be sent down if that happens... and if it does, there's also a good chance he'll be recalled and inserted into the lineup the moment they can.

Maybe ditto DOC.

Oh I was just referencing the bet I made with Pixies. I said that if the team is healthy that POJ will be on the NHL opening lineup over Smith. Smith clearly has more NHL experience but I think Hextall is going to play the "retain as much NHL talent as possible" game and will send Smith to WBS to start the season.

If I'm wrong I donate $10 to the charity of Pixies selection.
