A lot of people here resented the fact that he couldn't score with Geno. The thing with that is that they were only together for 23% of Heinen's even-strength ice time for the year. They make it all about that though, while conveniently forgetting he also potted 3 goals in the playoffs.

He finished 4th on the team in 5v5 P60 scoring. Passing on him with his 1 mil price tag would have been infuriating for me.

I expect him to be more durable and outperform Zucker again, a guy who's making over 5x more.
Here's the thing. Line 2 should be Rakell/Geno and a competition for the 3rd wheel.

Between
Heinen/Zucker though I know more of what to expect so keep that for later...
But give guys like DOC and Z a look because there could be more than expected.

A real dark horse scenario
Rakell-G-Puusy

I want something creative that can give us a real boost. Not the same thing we've seen and have a pretty clear idea where it'll lead unless other options falter.

Right sometimes we like to put Kapanen on the 3rd line and sometimes on the 4th line to get the team jolted.

Oh come on now. There was that one time where they moved Rust to L2 and blew everyone's damned minds.

...for like 10ish games then changed it back.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics, but Heinen-Geno was notably more successful than Rakell-Geno last season and wanting to start there makes a ton of sense. To the point where actually I'd think it worrying if the coach wasn't looking at Heinen there ahead of Rakell.

Tbh, you've kinda got to wonder why we want to see Rakell with Geno at all, other than a lack of other options. The stats are bad, albeit from a small sample. I can't recall many shifts where I thought they looked the answer. I'm not entirely sure what he's meant to offer other than a better than average from range shot.

I want Rakell with Crosby. If I was to complain about what we're seeing to start with, I'd complain about Rust going back to Crosby when the best part of post-deadline was Rakell with Crosby and Rust with Geno.

But keeping Rakell away from Geno? It raises some questions about why he's here, but I'm not hugely seeing the problem in terms of lines.

Here would be the crux for a team starved for top 6 talent. Why sign a guy to a large and lengthy contract and then slot him on line 3 where he'll have less minutes/impact...

Now you alluded to what the correct coaching action would be:
Sid/Rakell
G/Rust

Will we get that. My magic ball says "ask again later"

I mean you guys do you and fair enough. And I'm obviously just kinda goofing around considering these are essentially f***around lines. But if the team starts with a friggin Zucker/Malkin/Heinen L2 then yeah... that's really stupid to the point of seeming like punishment.

I can live with that. Were everyone else injured. Maybe lets try silliness like that when they HAVE to?

I have noticed that Rakell has always been playing with Carter when doing line rushes so far. I wouldn't read anything into it though, the 2nd line is assuredly going to be Zucker-Malkin-Rakell.

Boy am I glad we spent assets for a 3rd line winger!

Hey look at the bright side... now all these dorks can finally stop whinging about the Penguins not spending enough assets and cap on the precious third line. 14ish million ought to at least be a good START, right?

Also this is me reading too much into scrimmage lines, but I do think Smith is above POJ on the depth chart.

Regardless of what all these sticks-in-the-mud have to say... half the fun of this time of the year is making wildly outrageous predictions based on little to nothing.

But I mean I agree. It sure seems that way.
