Penalty Kill idea

Not sure if this has been discussed or if this is even legal. But I see so many broken sticks on the penalty kill by the penalty killers. Why don't the penalty killers just use wooden sticks? They are stronger and do not break with a simple tap. It's not like they're out there to score a goal. When a player breaks a stick its essentially a 5-3. Also I'm not sure what the length rules are for sticks (obviously not outrageous), but I noticed Mark Stone and Willie Mitchell use longer than normal sticks. Could players switch sticks to longer ones to takeaway the passing lanes away more efficiently.

Enstroms stick is long too. The players will play with whatever they feel works best. If that happens to be a wooden stick then so be it.

I think there should be a rule where a player cannot play without a stick. If a player breaks or loses his stick, he must go get another one or pick up the one he had if it's not broken.

Totally disagree.

I'd rather a player stick around and at least play the body than just completely abandon the zone and leave your team (potentially even more) short handed.

IMO players shouldn't be able to do this.

there is zero rationale for this to be a rule. So what if a player breaks his stick, he's already at a disadvantage without a stick, there is no need to make him get a new stick, they'll go when they can. Also for you point about interference, if there is an interference penalty, with or without a stick, the ref will call it. This is just an unnecessary idea

...that has to be photoshopped... right?
i think it was done as a joke, and not photoshopped....

also, I know SOME players have "PK" sticks that are a little bit longer then there regular sticks, but wooden sticks are pretty much done...I think any PK'er should have "PK" sticks set aside even if they are no different, but brand new sticks that havent seen any game time...the problem with that is there can be tiny imperfections in the stick that go undetected that can make it snap just as easy.

I seem to remember a study that claimed less goals were scored when a player went and grabbed a stick instead of playing without one. Maybe it's better to play 10 seconds of 5 on 3 than 30 seconds 5 on 4 without a stick?

Can't find the study though, maybe it's just a myth. Sounds plausible though.

Willie does actually play with a crazy long stick though...

I'm confused.

The idea is to play with a different stick on the PK - one that has less of a chance of breaking?
...but...
playing the rest of the game with a stick that has a higher chance of breaking is perfectly acceptable?

You've posted about this three times in this thread, but the only rationale you've offered up is "because".

You talk about how playing without a stick is " completely useless", which leads me to believe that you change the channel during power plays.

Then you talk about how it just gives players the chance to interfere more - so what? Let him do it and put his team down a second man. We don't need rules to save teams from their own lack of discipline.

Sure, it never happens. http://www.hockey-reference.com/leaders/goals_sh_career.html

(summed them up, by the way... PKers scored a total of 4'690 goals, according to that list that stops at 11 per player or more)

He didn't say it never happens, he said their not out there to score a goal, and their not.

Who said they're not out there to score a goal? Is it forbidden by any rule?

If the chance presents itself, they do score goals and plenty of them: almost 4,700 in the history of the league, according to that list, and more than that - most likely - had they included those who had up to 10 SHG, instead of starting the list at 11 SHG per player.

Suggesting to give PKers less performing sticks because of a "oh well they are not there to score", is a full on
And in my opinion another  is due for the suggestion of having players with worse equipment than others. Sport is at its best when the playing field is very much level for ALL. I believe it's a no brainer to see that having worse equipment for some doesn't make for a level playing field.

Hell Raiser brings up a compelling argument. Players should be allowed to play without a stick. Why? Because Hell Raiser said so.

Sticks that have a lesser chance of breaking like wooden sticks for example aren't as good for offensive production. On the PK this isn't much of a concern.

Jack Edwards brings this up just about any time a player breaks his stick on the PK.

I play goal...what do I know about sticks?
