One of the cool things about the Laine contract is that the deal expires around the time we'd likely be looking to add a piece from free agency.

Like Hughes said last summer, we weren't really in a position to be offering competitive long term deals in the UFA market because of our position in a rebuild, which also relates to the maturity of our core.

In a couple years when Laine needs a new contract, we'll have already auditioned him and our core will have matured more. If he's a good fit, we have a good chance to keep him long term.

Imo, it all hinges on exactly how much he's looking for. If he has ideas about getting the whole nine yards, he'll get flipped at the 2026 TDL.

This guy was bullied out of town in Winnipeg, unbelievable

it's not going to be all rose all the time, he has no filter and it's not gonna work for some of our media losers, but if the team can keep him happy through the tougher time make him a habs for life

last guy to give interviews like Laine's on the habs was Eller, though it was in smaller, less frequent bursts given he wasn't a key post-game interview. he'd say the most awkward, honest shit sometimes.

Fans generally really liked him. He had issues with management, teammates (in both Columbus and Winnipeg), coach and media. I hope HuGo have a squad of relationship councillors. And yes, I love this deal and I love the player.

In Winnipeg that was during Wheeler era but that was a pretty toxic situation overall

Multiple players wanted out, ex coaches called that locker room out and even Maurice quit

In Columbus on his last season they allowed him to be a mentor for Fantilli, if he was toxic they wouldn’t have allowed it
Yes, that’s at the end. But he was in Columbus for 4 seasons, players came and went, and I’m absolutely sure he had conflicts with a few of those players.

He was not problems in Columbus.
Cam Atkinson, Seth Jones, Werenski, Foligno, and Nyquist went to tell Jarmo K. that Laine absolutely had to go because of his attitude. Faced with the situation, Jarmo instead immediately shipped out Atkinson, Jones, Foligno and Nyquist. He only kept Werenski.

Basically in Winnipeg they took the vets position, and shipped out Laine. And in Columbus, they shipped out the vets and kept Laine… I don’t think people change much, hence I expect interpersonal problems also here. I hope that HuGo also expected it on Day 1 and have a plan in place.

Jones wanted to leave Columbus and play either in Dallas or in Chicago. Atkinson was traded because we needed a playmaker and Jarmo very wanted Voráček. Also Cam had a bad contract and that it was right trade every saw. Btw he has good relationship with Patrik. Nyquist played still one season even with Laine and the Nyquist - Jenner - Laine line was excellent. He was traded only in 2023 year and this should be in 2021 year. Foligno leaved the team in deadline for the first and third round. Werenski has good relationship with Laine too. He and Gaudreau minimum wanted so that Patrik played in Columbus. And still one article:

We have a very strong locker room. I think one of the best we've had in decades. This is probably the locker room Bergevin wanted but could never understand how to put together. And MSL, who is relentlessly criticized on this board, has played a big part in establishing this culture. Laine has been a test case for the quality of the hockey culure now in Montreal. And it has passed with flying colours. The wins will come, a bit more patience is required.

Coincidences exist. Maybe all four were shipped out for hockey reasons at the exact same time they told Jarmo that Laine had to go.

Btw, Porty wrote about 2021 year. But Patrik was traded in 2024 year and Porth never wrote bad about him from this year.
And not all, Nyquist was traded in 2023 year.

I don’t see it and don’t believe it. This is PR speak. Our results and performances and effort levels do not reflect a good locker room or culture.

Look at Dach’s low morale this year and the Slafkovsky saga… this isn’t all roses…

It hasn’t been even 10 games, so why not be patient before crowning him as “passed with flying colours”. We’ll see how the rest of the season plays out, we’ll see how fans treat him when he has a dry spell and gives a shit effort.

So far it’s been very easy going in Montreal because we’ve been in a losing-on-purpose phase. When losses matter, then we’ll see.

What Price and Subban had to deal with none of these guys can even imagine.
