I kinda feel like after last night's game, and some of the comments from Habs players saying they won because there were no passengers, that Laine's stint as a Hab may be short and sweet,

Which teams might be willing to take a 1 year cap dump in Laine to also get a 16th or 17th overall, namely for a 2nd line centre or top 4 RHD? Preferably someone between the ages 26-30 and over 6 ft.

Montreal could (and would have to) sweeten the pot with one of our many good but kinda redundant prospects (Kapanen/Beck/Mailloux/Mesar/Farrel/Tuch/Engstrom/Primeau etc...)

In previous years I would've suggested something with Arizona/Utah, but those days are seemingly over and I can't think of another team that's clearly cap-dump central. Maybe Seattle or NYI? I'd say Chicago but the only pieces that Montreal would want from there aren't available. Pittsburgh should go this route but won't be with Dubas.

Isles don’t need that contract on the books to eat up cap space that can be utilized properly. There’s enough defensive issues on the roster, adding in another one isn’t smart. I mean if Montreal wants Pelech and Duclair in return for Laine then we can make something happen.

A high end centre of that age will cost a lot more than a mid first, if Laine is added. Laine alone will cost that as a cap dump.

Roy with Laine would be hilarious. If he thinks Duclair is a bum, he hasn't seen anything yet

Laine is guy that Tony Perkis was talking about when he said lunch was cancelled for lack of hustle.
The saddest part about the Laine saga is that if he played at his hardest (training too so he was in his best condition) he’d be adored in Montreal. IMO there’s no better hockey market than Montreal for recognizing effort and sacrifice, especially when it’s coming from the most talented players. If Laine is traded (I think it’s inevitable) the cost will be retention and picks. Then the return could be the second line centre the OP is hoping for.

If the Isles decide to sell off Duclair, Engvall, Mayfield, Pelech and Pulock; then I’m all for 1 year of the Fortnite master but with all 5 returning, not a chance am I sacrificing Romanov and Holmstrom salary space on him.

*let’s make it more fun, send him to whichever team Torts gets hired by. Poor guy would be absolutely destroyed once Torts is done with him.

There's information that he might actually be injured, the strong knee brace he showed in the reg season. The lack of hustle argument stinks also since he didn't exhibit that in the 4 Nations. My guess is he just lacks fitness and is dealing with a nagging injury.

Laine honestly needs to go to a team that gives him no defensive responsible or expectations (eventhough that didn’t work in the past). Montreal requires too much from him and his mental health can’t handle it.

He's been playing injured. First 13 games Laine scored 10 goals. If he doesn't improve next season Habs will waive him or bench him at worst. Not paying anything to get rid of him

Get him to pull his head out of his behind and move him at the TDL for futures to a team out of the playoff when his cap hit is at his lowest. Someone will take him if they’re selling off and need a body to fill out the top 6 for a month and a half.

Maybe the Hawks or San Jose? Those teams could take his full contract and would be happy with the picks the Habs add. Not too sure if either team has the second line centre the OP hopes for though?

What do the Habs do with Laine though for the 60 games before the TDL?

Montreal has tons of caproom, went 8 million under the cap this season. No top free agents will sign here. His contract is not an issue. We not attaching a first round pick to rid of Laine. We draft well in mid first round. Last 3 picks in mid first round have been Guhle, Caufield and Hage. We are giving up one of their caliper to move 1 year of Laine. When don't need the caproom.

A rebuilding team will want the picks and the one year cap hit will be irrelevant to them

Hope he wakes up and realizes hockey makes more money than Fortnite for him. As for the other part, Chicago could work. Bedard made Donato look like a useful player so why not Laine.
If the Habs added a mid first then that could move Laine. Then the Habs need to add the cost of the second line centre to that. Maybe it’s better to dump Laine (cost the mid first) and sign a UFA #2 C?

Still need to find a taker for Laine and most teams really don’t want an $8m deadweight contract outside of ones struggling to reach the cap floor.

It’s highly possible the 1st will entice teams but his cap hit isn’t really easy to fit in. That’s the biggest problem with him. Teams would take a chance at $4m but they’re steering far away at $8m even if it’s only one season. $8m could bring in 2 quality players, not one with massive flaws.

And it seems like MSL doesn’t was a guy with those “massive flaws” playing with his elite, young players. IMO Laine is at a point with the Habs where he’s got to go. The club is too good to keep him.

No thanks. Not the kind of veteran I'd want in the Sharks locker room
