Hey guys, I have had a little trouble with patella tendinitis and I want to try a patella strap during games. Have any of you tried one while playing? The only reason I ask is the one I bought and the ones I have seen have a flexible "bar" that actually rests on the patella. It fits fine with my shin guards, but my main concern is with how much it protrudes off of your knee, when I fall on that knee all the pressure will be put right on the strap and my patella.
Anyone?

I wouldn't. I've used one for running and would never wear that under my shin pads. You could really mess up the tendon. You'd be okay with a knee brace though.

Yea, kinda the way I was going. I have one of those stretchy knee braces but it falls down after a couple mins of walking, I couldn't imagine it staying up during a game:laugh:
Other thing I was thinking was just like a standard flexible wrap like this wrapped around the patella

Or maybe some of that kinesio tape.

I may book an appointment with my PT guy for a session after my next game(even though its not really needed), but this way I can ask him what he thinks.

Have you tried kneeling on it to see if it could potentially hurt you?

Patellar tendinitis absolutely sucks, I had it for almost three years… let me explain…

First got it around May of 2011. It progressively got worse and worse to the point where it had quite a large impact on hockey. I couldn't go 100%. In the fall of 2012 I took about six weeks off of hockey and tried to baby that knee as much as possible, but still walked on it. When I started playing again it came back, but I don't think it was ever as bad as before. Still affected my game though.

Well, this past Fall I didn't skate for four months because I didn't have skates (long story, warranty issue). It turned out (I THINK) to be a huge blessing in disguise. I can still "sense" a feeling in my knee from time to time, but it's absolutely nothing like what it was before. I have my fingers crossed that it's gone for good and will never come back. I've bee back skating now for about six weeks, but only skating once or twice a week, so it's a bit too early to tell for sure, but I think it's gone.

I have no idea how bad your tendinitis is. I tried everything under the sun: cortisone shot (worked for six weeks or so), Aleve, strap, supplements, etc.

I think they all helped slightly.

I still walk up stairs and stuff differently because my body hasn't adjusted to not having the pain. It's pretty crazy to me. I can't tell how grateful I am to (hopefully) not have to deal with this anymore.

How much does the tendinitis affect your skating? Is it hard to get a deep knee bend, especially when it puts extra weight on that particular knee?

Taking time off is a gamble, because you never know if it will work and if it's been long enough.

Feel free to pm; I know where you're coming from.

I asked an old NHLer if guys got it too. He told me to do lots and lots of body weight squats. I started to do this for a time and I think it seemed to help. Not sure why I never put more time and effort into that, being as it was so simple. You might want to try that too.

Doesnt really affect my skating at all. I did try kneeling on the band and I would REALLY NOT want to fall on a knee wearing that thing... all the force would go right on to the patella.
Resting it is an OK thing to do, but from what I have been told strong Quads helps your patella track better, so strengthening and training your quads OUTSIDE of skating should help. Also, being nice and flexible takes some strain off of it as well. When I went to PT body squats and wall squats was something they had me do every day.
I think my biggest problem is my skill is much higher than my physical abilities right now. I played hockey for years and years, BUT I havent played much in the last 10 years. So while I instinctively skate like someone who has been doing it for 15 years, my body is of someone who has been doing it for 3 months. If that makes any sense.

Makes sense. Maybe it will work itself out once you've been skating a bit longer. And yeah, I heard the arguments for strong quads, but I think the tendinitis could be caused by a muscle imbalance too. If all you do is play hockey, your quads will grow a lot, but your hamstrings don't. IDK.

Have you tried compression knee sleeves?

2xU makes really high quality ones that might work.

Ive tried one while walking and it never stayed up. I figured no way it would stay in place during a game. Maybe it was a crappy brand?
