Hey guys, I have had a little trouble with patella tendinitis and I want to try a patella strap during games. Have any of you tried one while playing? The only reason I ask is the one I bought and the ones I have seen have a flexible "bar" that actually rests on the patella. It fits fine with my shin guards, but my main concern is with how much it protrudes off of your knee, when I fall on that knee all the pressure will be put right on the strap and my patella.
Anyone?
Have you tried kneeling on it to see if it could potentially hurt you?
Patellar tendinitis absolutely sucks, I had it for almost three years… let me explain…
First got it around May of 2011. It progressively got worse and worse to the point where it had quite a large impact on hockey. I couldn't go 100%. In the fall of 2012 I took about six weeks off of hockey and tried to baby that knee as much as possible, but still walked on it. When I started playing again it came back, but I don't think it was ever as bad as before. Still affected my game though.
Well, this past Fall I didn't skate for four months because I didn't have skates (long story, warranty issue). It turned out (I THINK) to be a huge blessing in disguise. I can still "sense" a feeling in my knee from time to time, but it's absolutely nothing like what it was before. I have my fingers crossed that it's gone for good and will never come back. I've bee back skating now for about six weeks, but only skating once or twice a week, so it's a bit too early to tell for sure, but I think it's gone.
I have no idea how bad your tendinitis is. I tried everything under the sun: cortisone shot (worked for six weeks or so), Aleve, strap, supplements, etc.
I think they all helped slightly.
I still walk up stairs and stuff differently because my body hasn't adjusted to not having the pain. It's pretty crazy to me. I can't tell how grateful I am to (hopefully) not have to deal with this anymore.
How much does the tendinitis affect your skating? Is it hard to get a deep knee bend, especially when it puts extra weight on that particular knee?
Taking time off is a gamble, because you never know if it will work and if it's been long enough.
Feel free to pm; I know where you're coming from.
