Sanheim is very impressive, he's got a short track record but despite it being limited it's still impressive. He's just scratching the surface here. He's got a big frame (6'3") & still has room to grow when he fills out (he currently weighs 190 lbs.). He skates like the wind & has excellent puck skills. He has potential to be the best defensemen out of this class when all is said & done in my opinion.

I'm looking at the Flyers acquiring wingers over D...the D prospect pool is large already and the Flyers already have an abundance of Centers, that said if the Flyers do acquire a bid Dman I wouldn't be unhappy about it.

Not a big fan of drafting for need.

I would still go BPA here (which very well could be a winger), I would be hesitant to draft a center though unless the value is way too go to pass up.

My biggest concern going with D is that the drop off from 17 to 48 in regards to defenders is minimal and possibly nonexistent altogether.

The top D's outside of Ekblad/Fleury are McKeown, DeAngelo, Sanheim, Dougherty, Honka, Glover, and Pettersson.

Outside of Honka, I think any of them have a chance to be there at 48. I think the drop amongst forwards from 17 to 48 is much larger. I think you have to be pretty sure about what you're getting to go with a D at our spot in the first round. I like Sanheim and Honka a lot, but I'm not confident enough to pick them given what may be available later.

As for Nick Ritchie, he's a very enticing prospect. He's huge and he's fast...but that's at the junior level. My concern is, what happens when the gap in those skills is not as wide once he's in the NHL? He's intriguing, for sure, but I see too much Chris Stewart in him to get excited right now. I'd much rather go with one of the guys with skill (eg, Milano, Fiala, Vrana, etc.) who will always have that to develop from. Let Ritchie go to Toronto and be their project. They seem to love those kinds of players.

At 17 there should be alot of more forward there than defenders.

I know some people here like Sanheim but most scouting reports have his potential as a 2nd pairing defender. That isnt too bad but I would rather take a higher potential forward at that spot.

Edit: seems like your typical Flyers pick. Other than Button, he ranks 30th on ISS, 53rd NA on CS, and THW has him as a 2nd round pick. At this point it would be considered a major reach.

We'll have to wait for Mckenzies consensus list to have a better idea of where Sanheim might go. With the lack of quality D in this draft, it wouldn't surprise me to see a bunch of them go much higher than most think. We all know how much young defensemen are coveted nowadays.

This is how I see things shaking down before our pick going by need and general team preferences over time:

FLA - Ekblad
BUF - Reinhart
EDM - Draisaitl
CGY - Bennett
NYI - Dal Colle
VAN - Ehlers
CAR - Nylander
TOR - Ritchie
WPG - Fleury
ANA - Virtanen
NSH - Fabbri
ARZ - Barbashev
WSH - Larkin
DAL - Fiala
DET - McCann
CBS - Kapanen
PHI -

I think the top seven is fairly interchangeable, but I don't see any unexpected names jumping up to that group. Winnipeg is the toughest to nail down. I think they're in a pretty tough spot where everything left on the board is something they already have. I could see them making a move to jump into the top seven to land Ehlers or Nylander.

I think Fabbri/Nashville and Larkin/Washington are perfect matches. And I can see any of DAL, DET, or CBS going with a D as well.

This all just my mindless speculation and boredom, so TIFWIW. I'm just a draft nut, and can't wait for the 27th. Best day of the hockey season not including playoffs, imo.

I'm definitely on the Sanheim boat with you. He has the tools to really become something good. And we know how the Flyers like those late risers.

Hopefully the rest of the NHL thinks the kid is a late first/early 2nd pick and he's still there for us. I've seen him everywhere from #8 to something in the 40s.

Just a couple of changes. I would actually switch Anaheim and Vancouver's pick. If that's the way the draft unfolds, I would want Sanheim or Tuch there I think.

He's pretty raw so he isn't a safe pick but he has home run potential at #17 if he's there.

He met with all 30 teams at the combine so there's a lot of interest in him. Toronto for example doesn't have a second rounder & has the #8 pick. They were rumored to be looking to move up for Ekblad so who knows.

I will say one thing, the easiest way to describe players is either a 2nd line center or a 2nd pairing defender when regarding prospects. Any player in the top five? Well he can be a tp line center or a top pairing defender. This process isn't wrong in anyway but I think players have much more to offer than others sometimes. Case in point is Morin, people just write him off as a top pairing player or such because his offense wasn't where people want it to be with those prospects. Thing is though Morin really started to put #'s up when he was used more on the top PP unit when an injury to Kostalek(IIRC) happened. He is the prospect I am really looking forward to due to his size, skating(amazing for his size), shot(104 MPH) and reach. The talent is all there and when the big game comes around he steps up.

Really what I am trying to say is Sanheim I believe might have more potential then a second pairing defender. If he is there at 17th overall, I have no problem taking him with that pick. I wouldn't even mind trading back if we think he is there at 20 or so either. Never hurts to grab more assets.

What do you guys think about Barbashev? I like him,Fiala, Vrana and Milano. Barbashev is the only one I haven't seen any Flyers talking about.

I think Barbashev is off the board anyway by our pick. Coyotes and Caps are rumored to be very interested, and he fits both those teams pretty well.

Not to mention our scouts hate Russians.

What are some thoughts on Brendan Perlini? I can see him being a leftover guy available at 17. I think Toronto would have interest at #8 because he has some sweet chemistry with Carter Verhaeghe, but if they go in a different direction, I'm not sure who else would pick him up. I don't know enough about him to have an educated opinion, but most lists have him pretty high.

Maybe so but Barbashev isn't your sterotypical Russian here. He has a lot of Flyer like qualities (two-way play, size, physicality, effort, etc.) & plays in a region where they lean on heavy so you never know.

I see the Red Wings being interested in Barbashev but I'd love him in the orange and black.

I'd take Perlini in that circumstance.

If the following players were still on the board, how would you rank them?

Sonny Milano
Dylan Larkin
Kevin Fiala
David Pastrnak
Alex Tuch
Jakub Vrana
Haydn Fleury
Travis Sanheim
Roland McKeown
