Honestly, I think Milano would be a much safer pick than Fiala and Tuch. While Tuch's legs and size fits into the gameplan that Hexy would want, I think that Milano's speed, skill, reach (for his size) and tenacity would do wonders for this team, especially since he's a LW.
I would agree, though I think Fiala will prove to be a great value pick for whoever takes him in the teens. He's a quick but stocky winger with lots of skill, and he had a real solid year playing with the men in Sweden. I honestly would not be shocked if he makes an NHL team in October. Milano and Tuch are safe picks though just on the fact that they're going to be developing at BC (edit: and like LOD said above, Tuch's size and skating make him probably the safest bet to stick even if it's in a less rewarding role).
I'd say the following players are guaranteed to be off the board at 17: Ekblad, Reinhart, Bennett, Draisaitl, Dal Colle, Ehlers, Nylander, Virtanen, Ritchie, and Fleury.
That means, of the massive clump of players in the mid-round range, six should be off the board by our pick. I can see teams loving players like McCann, Larkin, and Fabbri and picking them up in that range, and I can't see Kapanen or Perlini falling into the 20s or late teens even though it sounds like Kapanen's stock is falling. Then if a team wants D, McKeown, DeAngelo, and Pettersson are also players who could be taken in that range.
So the chances are high that at least one of Milano, Fiala, or Tuch would be available. And I'd say it's almost certain that Vrana (another guy I'm high on) will be available. It's shaping up for us to have a handful of players to pick from that would all make sense at #17.
This draft is not weak at all. I don't know why that's the prevailing opinion. Just because there's no MacKinnon this year doesn't mean the rest of the draft is weaker than previous years.
