The Isles beat writer Arthur Staple believes the Isles will trade the 5th overall pick.

Dreger reported the Panthers had a strong offer on the table for the 1st overall pick the other day. I wonder if the two are related.

Staple is pretty connected as well, so he probably has a good sense of this. Wasn't he the one that broke the news that the Isles offered their entire draft class to move up a couple years back?

I agree with those pointing out that speed is not really the main issue. More than anything our D needs players with Hockey IQ and puck skills. Effectively moving the puck is more important than skating speed. We have too many guys that can't make or accept a pass, or can't read the play unfolding well enough

Well BC will be even more stacked next year now that Noah Hanifin (top prospect for 2015 draft) will be playing there a year earlier after accelerating his schooling. He'll join Milano & Tuch.

Could you imagine how good that team would be if Gaudreau stayed for his senior year, and Eichel chose BC over BU.

They'll still be stacked especially on the backend now. Hanifin will join Michael Matheson (FLA 1st 2012), Ian McCoshen (FLA 2nd 2013), Steven Santini (NJ 2nd 2013), & Scott Savage (draft eligible this year) to go along with Thatcher Demko in net.

It'd be nice to draft either Milano or Tuch because it'd probably be easier for me to watch them play than a CHL or euro prospect...

Unless I'm an idiot and don't know of an easy (and free) way to watch them play.

When you watch the game tonight, watch how many times a dman gets the puck behind his net, stops and then has a forward come back behind when net(what we do). It NEVER happens. As soon as they retrieve the puck, they are skating it out and the breakout begins. It happens without any delay.

Anyways, I think this year we take a F with our first pick.

Some under the radar day 2 dmen that I've been reading up on from the Black Book. I'd be interested in them.

Daniel Walcott, LD, Armada (QMJHL) 5'11 168 lbs. Ranked 91 overall.

Excellent skating dman who loves to rush the puck up the ice. Plays PK and PP. Sounds a little like Gostisbehere

I can add this on Walcott, since i saw a tons of him and wrote his profiles in HockeyProspect.com blackbook. No secret i like him a lot, flyers might have an inside track on him. Remember Ian Laperriere is part of the ownership of the Blainville-Boisbriand where Walcott played this year.

He's a tough one to project due to being a 94 born and being in his first QMJHL season but there's not a lot of depth on the blueline in this draft. There will always be place for mobile puck moving defensemen in the NHL and Walcott is that plus he can play with an edge.

Not everyone is sold on him, i know 2 nhl teams where he's a ND. I could be very right or very wrong on this one ;)

I still like Blake Siebenaler out of those three names. He has the skating & size down to go along with offensive skills but needs some polishing in his own end. Also most importantly he's a right handed shot which we need desperately in our system.

He converted to defense from forward like two years ago & this was his first year playing defense for a whole year in the OHL.

He still has some room to fill out so there could be some upside there while he continues to get used to playing the defensive position.

If we're inclined to take a defender, I would strongly consider trading up from 48 to the early 2nd round if Jack Dougherty is still available. Plays a safe game, but is physical and has poise with the puck (and a plus slapshot).

Seems like the perfect complement to the stable of D prospects we have.

He's also going to Wisconsin which is a factory for defenders. I'm huge on players who you know are going to get quality development (eg, forwards at BC). Seems like one of the safer guys to pick who still has upside.

that sounds spot on

I could see Dougherty going anywhere from the 20-40 range. He had a good showing at the U18's so it wouldn't surprise me if some team took him in the first round.

so, would anybody be upset if we find a team that wants to move up and take someone else and we trade down and grab what another 2nd for the transaction and take Jack Dougherty at 20 whatever. and he is a right hand shot to boot. we could sure use a righty on our D. another puck moving d man, strong skater. i can see him ending up over 200 lbs.

There's still some other good right handed options in the second round if not. Josh Jacobs, Jack Glover, Ryan Collins, Dysin Mayo, Aaron Haydon, Ryan Mantha, etc. possibly Anthony DeAngelo or Julius Honka.

I really think Florida is going to trade out of #1 this year. A lot of smoke there & it makes a lot of sense this year.

So do I. Vancouver seems the most likely destination so they can take Reinhart. I think it would be a smart move for both teams.

Reinhart-Horvat should be a solid 1-2 punch, and Florida can go with a dynamic offensive player like Nylander, Ehlers, or Dal Colle to complement Barkov on their top line.

As for us trading back, I don't think that's the move this year. We're in the perfect spot where the talent hasn't dropped off and we should have a couple solid players to choose from. And like you said, there should be somebody available in round 2, anyway.

I could really see them trying to trade with anyone as far back as #8 with Toronto. I don't think the #1 pick is as enticing all across the board with teams this year like it is in normal years. However there might be a team out there who covets Reinhart or Ekblad & will be willing to move up to secure one of them.

I don't think Florida desperately needs Ekblad & with the history of defensemen going #1 not doing so well or even the lack there of in recent years I could see them directing their attention elsewhere & trying to pick up some extra assets in the process.

The Isles could be a potential partner as well with the rumor that they're going to trade the #5 pick. Snow offered his entire 2012 draft up for the #2 pick in 2012 for Ryan Murray. Ekblad & Reinhart are probably the only two players as of now who should be in the NHL next year so maybe he's looking for a way to help himself out possibly next year while giving the fanbase #1 overall draft choice to try & make up for next year's potential loss.

I wouldn't mind trading to #5 and taking MDC. Some people have him ranked #1 even. And he plays a position of need big time.

That pick is the Islanders pick, so I doubt we would want to trade any players to a team within our division. I like Dal Colle, but if we are going to trade up I'd rather go all in and trade up for Ekblad.

The problem is the price. To move to 5, we're probably talking about our 1st, a prospect and perhaps another pick.

Pretty much, we don't have the picks nor the prospects to make such a move & no shot in hell that this organization actually trades roster players straight up for potential down the line (which I can't blame them there).

Just stay the course at #17 move up a few picks to secure a player you really like if you have to but there's where I would draw the line.

I think this draft is better than most people think. Even though the big guys (top 5) are not of the star quality as other drafts, they look like first line no worse than second line players. There afre a lot of good hockey players after the big 5 too. I think Ehlers is going to be a big deal at the NHL level, and the rest of the top 20-30 should be good players. Furthermore, after the first round, there are still quite a few good raw talents, and I think there will be a lot of guys eventually make it from this draft.
In the second and third (if the Flyers have the Bruin's pick) I think Hawryluk, Schmaltz, Siebenaler, Vanier, England, Glover, Collins, Tkachev, Jacobs, Pollock, Ben Thomas, MacLeod and Magyar look like good players and fit here.
The best scenario is that someone like Sanhein, Dougherty, Goldobin, Vrana or Honka slide to the Flyers second round spot in teh same way Haag did last year. That is not likely though.
