You’d think that the organization would have done its due diligence prior to signing such an insanely rich contract. Let’s hope that’s the case and that this is all just a short term blip.

How would they even know of this if it happened (which it clearly didn't)? There was nothing in the police reports, etc. This would have surfaced by now if it was remotely true.

I think you should distinguish between the Russian people and their oppressive government IMO. Not everyone living their agrees with what is happening over there.

Those people you're referring to actually appreciate when the international community is honest about the tyranny they're living under.

Such words would not be considered an attack on the Russian people.

Alright fair enough lol this aint the hill I am dying on

Sounds like this story is total bogus. I hope Panarin and his family are safe.

Well the latvians are currently saying this is not true, so the only real source for this is someone clearly doing this for political reasons
Did the Latvian police make a statement?

It could be envy as well. Nazarov never played at the Panarin's level. Politics (from both sides) are just a way to cover or exacerbate things up.

Seems more likely, as others have suggested, to be politically motivated by the former coach and not Putin. In fact I can see Putin rolling his eyes at Nazarov and saying 'this is the best you can do?' lol
Possible. Ultimately, authoritarian systems encourage this sort of thing, even passively. Though this looks very sloppy and unconvincing as of now, it just further cements the idea that criticizing him will cause you problems, even if you’re thought to be untouchable physically. I doubt he’d see it as a negative

The club/hotel where this supposedly happened said its not true and highly doubt theres some secret police reports that no one in the nhl knew about for the last 5 years

Zadorov comes to mind. It's important to not that Russian hockey players who earn the NHL have a lot less to lose when they criticism the current government. They are much less vulnerable to possible retaliations. Yulia Stepanova, though, is a dissenter who had to risk a lot.
Stepanova? Really? She makes money out of it.
Yes, Zadorov, who esle? I was of the impression from your post that Panarin's critique of Putin's regime and his support of Navalny was something commonplace in Russia.

I was wondering if Panarin who came from a poor background even had 40,000 euros to bribe people with, unless someone paid on his behalf.
Josh Hennessy describes the Vityaz owners as stereotypical Russian gangster types, and he talks a bit about Panarin in his Spittin Chiclets interview too, but he wasn't on the 2011 team

Even in the US, being an "important person" grants you privileges that others would never enjoy. Seemingly every year, there's some scandal involving college athletes, many of whom aren't even big-time players, and the favorable treatment they receive from local police jurisdictions. Their crimes being covered up, or never investigated, or receiving punishments that the average person could never dream of in their leniency. It's not necessarily an indictment of police but of society and their priorities, and the fascination with power and influence. I imagine this is as true in Russia, Latvia, the EU, anywhere, as it is here in North America.
I agree. I was sarcastic in my previous post, but I didn't include a specific emoti.

I am sure that most hockey fans (not just the Rangers' supporters) would just want for this crap to be over, so they could simply enjoy watching and talking about hockey.

I would understand and probably even applaud if Latvian police refuse to even respond to inquiries.

I read this on another board. This is apparently coming from a Latvia reporter that covers the KHL:

Aivis Kalniņš
@AivisKalnins
Hotel spokesperson as well as multiple other sources have told me that no such incident has occurred. One person who I spoke to answered with “No, absolutely not. If you look at what Nazarov said and do a little research you’d instantly see through his lies”

I have now reached out to local authorities, the hotel that runs the bar in which the alleged incident would have occurred as well as many of Panarin’s former teammates. No response as of right now.

Surprised how quickly the Rangers are refuting the allegations. By their own admission, they don't even know the source. It's one thing to put a player on leave while the team conducts its own internal investigation. But that's not what the Rangers are doing here.

I thought the same thing. Maybe they had prior knowledge of the circumstances or had been talking to Panarin and his agent about it for some time.

Their swift denial isn't something that's normal in the sports world. Usually at this point its just a canned response that they are aware of it and looking into it.

Gotcha.

If there was a cover up, then the NHL definitely wouldn't know about it. The way it looks like, this won't make much of the story. It's been too long since the alleged event.

Pure conjecture on my part, but I'm sure there's more to the story that we don't know. Andrei Nazarov shooting his mouth off in Russia wouldn't scare Panarin enough to leave the team. I'm guessing that something else has been communicated privately, perhaps indirectly.
