I would again strongly encourage everyone to read the full interview with Nazarov. The entire piece is a "this guy criticizes Russia--but look at who he really is!" type of ugly hit job. Even if there a kernels of truth, the way this has been presented is garbage.

За что Артемий Панарин мог сесть в начале 2010-х?

It happened in Riga, Latvia, not Russia. Latvia is a part of the EU, the free world. I would presume that the police are honest there. Maybe some Latvians on these boards could assure us of this.
Well the latvians are currently saying this is not true, so the only real source for this is someone clearly doing this for political reasons

Even in the US, being an "important person" grants you privileges that others would never enjoy. Seemingly every year, there's some scandal involving college athletes, many of whom aren't even big-time players, and the favorable treatment they receive from local police jurisdictions. Their crimes being covered up, or never investigated, or receiving punishments that the average person could never dream of in their leniency. It's not necessarily an indictment of police but of society and their priorities, and the fascination with power and influence. I imagine this is as true in Russia, Latvia, the EU, anywhere, as it is here in North America.

THE STAR IS IN SHOCK
A native of the southern Urals, Artemiy Panarin is a star of the New York Rangers and the entire NHL. He, along with Alexander Ovechkin and Yevgeny Malkin, is one of the most famous Russian hockey players overseas. But the 29-year-old extreme striker, unlike his older comrades, wants to shine not only on the ice or in commercials, but also in the overseas media and popular social networks . And not so much because of his achievements in hockey (he undoubtedly has them), but rather because of his "political comments". Which do not concern America - but what is happening in Russia. Having learned the school of life in the harsh Chelyabinsk "Tractor" Panarin, whose name in the NHL is Khlebushek, seems to have forgotten his roots, his teachers, and some facts of his own biography.

Surprisingly, it was the American media that reminded him of something. In the overseas mass media, an ugly story has surfaced related to one of the highest-paid NHL players who came from Russia. It turned out that the star of sports New York and the richest hockey league in the world, in November 2011, while in Riga as a player of the Moscow region "Vityaz", who came to the match with the Riga Dynamo, hooliganism in a local bar. Artemiy beat a Latvian citizen. And I avoided a trial and a very likely real sentence thanks to one simple thing. We had to make a "deal"with the local security forces. And not even to him.

The coach of Vityaz in those years was Panarin's countryman, the first Russian tafgai in the NHL (a power hockey player who knows how to "crush" an opponent, often provoking fights) Andrey Nazarov. After playing 12 seasons in the NHL, Nazarov returned to his homeland. And after finishing his career as a player, since 2007 he began to coach clubs playing in the KHL. As well as national teams of neighboring countries. In the 2011/12 season , when Nazarov was in charge of Vityaz near Moscow, Panarin also played in it.
Andrey Viktorovich knew very well the very young hockey player-countryman both as an athlete and as a person. Having a rich overseas experience, he understands that people in America are changing, and not always for the better. Although some of the bells were already at home…

DIRTY LINEN IN PUBLIC
- Did you have any problems with Artemiy during training or off the court?
- I was taught one of the main principles: everything that happens within the team-within the team, must remain.
- Well, it's not just about hockey.
"Maybe." But our sport is tough, strong, and the character of the players is formed accordingly. Over the course of my career and player and as a coach I have seen a lot of amazing episodes. Sometimes as a participant. Sometimes I watched from the sidelines.
- Did you have more "adventures" at home or overseas?
- And here, and in Europe, and in America and Canada. Those who know me well know that Nazarov does not take out the details of conversations with hockey players or coaches. And the more the negotiations with the managers or the leaders of the clubs.
- Why did you decide to change your rule now?
- There was one unpleasant incident that happened to Artemiy in the early 2010s. And I would not have remembered him if it were not for the behavior of Panarin, with whom we worked closely at Vityaz, which I have recently seen in the States.
- And what about the United States – he plays well there, scores a lot, gives accurate passes…
"I'm not talking about how he plays. I mean, it "broadcasts". What Artemiy has been doing in recent years does not do him credit as a citizen of Russia, a member of the national team.

OPEN YOUR EYES
- Do you mean any specific statements of his?
- At first, Panarin was not so much a sports talent (he has a talent) as a young smart guy. He was from New York, teaching life to the country that made him a man. "Opened our eyes."
"For what?"
- In his opinion, Russia is now worse than in the 90s. He claims that lawlessness reigns in the country. Once I calculated that 70% of the inhabitants of the "real truth" and do not need at all.
"Wait a minute. According to his calculations, 100 million compatriots do not understand anything?
- Well, yes, and such an advanced Artemiy, sitting across the ocean, understands everything in the world. Honestly, it's not even funny.
- Andrey Viktorovich, well, many famous people in social networks teach others, often quite categorically.
- So if Panarin had stopped there. The guy began to call on his fellow citizens to riots and riots. Demands freedom for unscrupulous criminal liars.
- Do you think they listen to him in Russia?
- Artemiy has a lot of subscribers. Some of them, believing the NHL star, goes to the streets and violates the law.
- At the same time, the hockey player himself will not get anything for it.
"That's just it! And this is just meanness. He wipes his feet on some of them, and pushes others to commit crimes. First, he pours dirt on the country where he was born and grew up. Then it shakes the stability.
RIGA BALSAM
- You spoke about an unpleasant episode…
- About 10 years ago, he got a chance to get smarter. Just become a normal adult man. But the guy chose another road.
"So what happened then?"
- In Riga on December 11, 2011, our "Vityaz" lost to the local "Dynamo" with a score of 0:2. Panarin managed to throw only a few times on goal during the entire match. It seems that I was saving energy for the evening "feats".
- You did not leave Riga immediately after the match - for reasons of economy?
- We had to fly to Minsk in the morning. Most of the hockey players went to rest in their rooms. Except for a few legionnaires and Artemius.
- Decided to relax?
"I went to the bar at the Radisson Hotel. And in the course of the evening rest, he somehow did not like the young visitor of the institution. Our attacker sent an 18-year-old Latvian citizen to the floor with several powerful blows.
- Do you know the reason?
- It's hard to say now. After beating the girl, he hurried to the room. And he asked to bring his teammate, Misha Anisin, who, unlike Artemy, ordered only juice at the bar. But the police arrived quickly. Panarin was detained. We made a protocol.
- Did you have a criminal case?
- The case, the court and the actual term. But the authoritative residents of Riga stood up for Panarin. Negotiations were held with the police authorities. I did not participate in the negotiations, but I heard about the figure of 40 thousand euros in cash-for putting the brakes on the case.
- This amount was paid by the perpetrator of the debauchery?
- His salary then, it seems to me, clearly did not reach this amount.
- So the criminal case was not initiated?
"No," I said. And he couldn't seem to believe that he had escaped with a slight fright.
- What was it expressed in?
- While waiting for the landing, he was not himself. We were still laughing: "Let's put Panara in the luggage. So that nothing happens."

SELECTIVE MEMORY
- Did you have an educational conversation as a coach?
- Yes, but this is not the main thing, we are in front of the parents of the girl who suffered from Panarin, and we did not even apologize to her. But we did everything to ensure that our rising star did not go to jail. I didn't ruin my career.
"But a prison could ruin you."…
- It happens in different ways. But what is clear now is that we were wrong then.
"In what way?"
"Artemiy didn't deserve to be saved from punishment by the whole world for beating a girl. I don't know about him, but I apologize to both the girl and her parents for my former player…
- Well, once you stumble – with whom does not happen…
- So if only once…But there was also theft from the pockets of his own teammates on the children's team. And he himself later told about it. And the willingness to raise a hand against the weak. And the provocations - even verbal ones-of recent years in his social networks.
"Such a seemingly honest, open-minded guy.
- He has the image of Mr. Justice. Thousands of subscribers believe him. Damn it, Artemiy, if you want to be honest, then tell me everything about yourself honestly. Do you even remember that Riga story? You've made your own way to the zone. And big people and not the biggest money saved you from a crooked path.
- Well, it is unlikely that there will be a self-disclosure session.
"Why doesn't the millionaire Panarin come out of his Manhattan penthouse and go live?" Just in front of the camera to share non-paraded moments of your life? Or did the NHL star forget about those Riga events, throw them out of his head and out of his life?
- Since there was no criminal case and the protocol was thrown out long ago – we can assume that there was no beating of the girl.
- But there are people who saw it and remember what happened next.
"I could have experienced what it's like to be a prisoner." And what is it-to demand "respect for rights and freedoms" - when he himself violated the rights and freedoms of others.
"He wouldn't have asked for anything. In his life, there would be no NHL with a hundred million from the Rangers, or a beautiful wife in one of the richest cities in the world. After serving a few years, kalym would have been a taxi driver or would now be working at a gas station in the city of Chekhov.
"But anyone can make a mistake.
- Personally, I have always been responsible for my own actions. And the young Panarin in Riga just hid. He waited for them to rescue him. And now he's teaching life to a huge country. Of these it is a pity, feel sorry for others. Don't you feel sorry for the girl you beat?

Who else?
Zadorov comes to mind. It's important to not that Russian hockey players who earn in the NHL have a lot less to lose when they criticize the current government. They are much less vulnerable to possible retaliations. Yulia Stepanova, though, is a dissenter who had to risk a lot.

I think you should distinguish between the Russian people and their oppressive government IMO. Not everyone living their agrees with what is happening over there.

I think it's fairly obvious I'm not talking about every person in the country. Are you serious with this?

Yup, it starts off by basically saying, "Let's talk about Artemi Panarin, a great Russian hockey player, who has betrayed his homeland by speaking ill of its current leadership. We'll also talk about awful things he did without providing any independent verification, because f*** him."

But 40,000 euros makes no sense. Maybe 400 euros in that case. The whole thing doesn't make sense. What sort of an assault would be so bad that it would take 40,000 euros to pay off the authorities while still being something that could the handled with money?

I was wondering if Panarin who came from a poor background even had 40,000 euros to bribe people with, unless someone paid on his behalf.
