I don’t think Panarin’s NMC is as big of an issue as most of you do. When he signed a 7 year deal, controlling where he would be was important to him. Right now, he only has one season remaining after this, and then he gets to pick his destination again. The Rangers are in disarray internally (look at the other thread and all the tweets after the last few games that are coming out) and it seems obvious the band is going to get broken up. Shesterkin’s next contract isn’t a guarantee. Panarin may not have any problem being sent to a contender for 1.5 seasons and then cashing in again. He’s still a 90-100 point player. At 5.8M he could generate a bidding war. Maybe. I’m just thinking outside the box because my team is at a crossroads.

I tend to think the Rangers' brass knows they are stuck and that not much is going to shake loose at the top of their roster, where the money and the NMCs live. Publicly signaling they are open for business does say that they would make a trade, sure, but even in the absence of actual moves it sends a shot across the bow to the team, especially those who might be complacent.

More messaging than a sign of a trade, I think. In time, they'll have to make some actual moves. Right now, they want the existing roster to play better because they know most of these guys are locked in for a while.
