Damn. That's pricey, but Sanderson could be a #1 guy going forward, which would make that a terrific deal. It's still a good deal even if he settles in as a top pairing defenseman. Anything less than that, and it's an overpay. Good bet by the Sens, but still quite a bit of risk surrounding the deal.

They all are when you’re giving a big extension after an ELC.

I would give Power the Sanderson deal for sure. If anything I would think Power would want to go for the bridge and prove he's #1 quality to get a similar deal to what Dahlin is about to sign.

There is a risk there. The problem for Power is that with Dahlin there, he simply won’t get the PP time to rack up the points he would need to get a Dahlin esq deal.

I think right now it’s a tossup between Sanderson and Power in terms of quality. I give the contract edge to OP because of his bigger stature and 1OA pedigree, so maybe 8.5x8 right now?

I bet OP waits for the Seider deal, which I guess comes in closer to 9.

Bridge 3x6 + 8x12
114M total. 11 years

Early contract 8x8.5 + 3x13
107M total 11 years

Little more risk with the early contract. Save some cash. Who knows maybe I'm way off in numbers.

On Sanderson’s whopping eight-year deal with the Senators and how it affects Power’s, who has a year left on his entry-level deal with the Sabres.

When you’re a year out with an entry-level player — Jake had another year left under contract — you rarely do a bridge. You do a bridge at the end of a contract. Usually you explore a seven- or eight-year deal if you’re a year out. … First of all, Jake was happy there, sees the future. He likes where the organization’s going, and therefore we went right to eight years, so there’s no question, especially a year out. … We’ve had a few conversations (with Buffalo on Power) and now camp is a week away from now, so we’re going to continue to talk. Of course, Owen and Jake are within similar comps. You always bring a pool of about seven to 10 players, so we’ll see how it goes.

Good luck getting him signed to only a 3 year deal after an 8 year deal.

You're probably right. It would also be pretty dumb to trade him at 29 after the 8 yr early deal. Bridge make the most sense assuming 8x12 are fair numbers for everyone in 3 years?

I would prefer the team control for 11 years if they can work it out.

The risk is how happy will OP be as the second fiddle to Dahlin. If he wants to be 1D, a bridge could mean that he strong arms his way out of town before that 3rd contract ala MTkachuk, PLD, etc.

Maybe. Maybe he'll make a boat load of money and win a bunch of games and think that things aren't too bad. It would make for a hell of a restock if he did force a move.

I don't think he cares about the fiddle order if the team starts winning. I think players care more about winning than the perceived pecking order.

Maybe. But, players also want to get paid. Stats lead to getting paid. PP1 time leads to stats. And Dahlin may block Power's ability to get PP1 time and thus limit his earning potential.

Tampa has Hedman and Sergachev, it is unlikely that Sergachev is upset that he is second fiddle. Vegas has Pietro and Theodore, and there are other examples. I hope Owen does the right thing.

I think in this day and age, if a player wants to be traded he will be traded 9/10 times. Length of contract doesn't really tie you down to a team so much as to a salary. While there's a difference in control if you are UFA or pending UFA, the point is if he signs long-term it doesn't prevent him from moving on should he actually care about being behind Dahlin.

All that said, I doubt it is in his mind. There is a ton of ice time for both. In key moments they often are on the ice together.

can easily put them both on the #1 PP. Dahlin can slide up to the half wall if needed, or Power can.

Dahlin played some as forward on the PP his first year

With all the forwards the Sabres have, I doubt you see them go that route. Especially since they might be the lone team in the league doing it.

This is a unique situation as none of those teams have two 1OV D.

And then we'll have to wait and see if Johnson is ok playing 3rd fiddle [sarcasm emoji]

How does this affect? The point is that there are teams that have two very good defenders and they do not ask for a trade.

Sergachev and Theodore are not the same type of 1OV level D like Power is and they likely aren’t looking for top 10 D money like Power will probably want.

Debatable. Sergachev is an excellent defender, and Theodore too.
