The biggest difference between fans of the Russian National Team (not everyone) and NHL fans is that Russian fans absolutely have to dump on everyone if the team loses, whereas NHL fans support their team and favorite players no matter what the results,” Nastya wrote in the caption as translated by Graham Dumas. “We need to be proud of our countrymen, who are idolized by millions of people around the world and serve as examples for young people! We need to know how to take a loss with dignity and value the work of other people. I wish everyone well, and good luck to the guys tomorrow!”

Nastya Ovechkina asks frustrated Russian hockey fans to chill after team’s 1-0 loss to Finland

Well, professional athletes bask in accolades when they do well, they should accept some (stress "some") criticism when they don't. Just as Canada's fans were incredibly disappointed when Canada lost in Nagano, Russia's fans have some reason to be upset that all that firepower couldn't come up with a single goal against what anyone would agree was a vastly weaker Finnish team.

Now, after an initial wave of disappointment, sports fans should remember it's just a game and move on. But it's reasonable for fans to criticize professional athletes when they underperform.

It seems more that Russian fans are feeling that OV isn't bringing his success onto the international stage. People will point to the fact that Sid has two Olympic golds (one of which they eliminated OV and the Russians in the process). The Russians winning in '18 certainly digs at OV in that regard.

The response from Russian fans after the loss to Finland has been pretty bad. Not sure how any Russian can criticize another after this years display. Biggest crybabies I've seen in any year.

I like the medias new thing these days of when any woman gives an opinion she is always talked about as being a "strong woman"

They are in love with that mantra these days.
show me on the doll where the journalist touched you

no matter whether that comment came from her or from the head coach, it was a very prudent thing to say and communicated well.. for you to ignore it and lock onto that little bit shows that you're not too far off from those journalists you hate so much

Considering it's 99% likely she'll get death threats for even saying that little, it's somewhat warranted.

You're missing the point. When a man speaks out, he's not referred to as a "strong man". This is the equivalent of describing a black as "articulate".

When we have a thread about national team performance, you don't really notice one idiot because 9 others are reasonable and peacefull, but when it's on national scale, 1 million idiots pretty sure will make some noise, especially when most of the times, it's them who refuse to quit and pass on other things. I check russian media, pretty everyone talked about how russian team was outcoached, so only complete morons blame team performance on the ice. They tried hard, but if you have wrong system, talent will fail most of the times.

International hockey remains a relatively disappointing feature of Ovechkin's resume. He's had a great NHL career, which was completed when the Caps finally won a Cup. Nonetheless, not every great player gets to check all the career achievement boxes.

Well, NHL fans bash their teams' players just as fervently, the only difference being the players are under contracts, so they can't be disposed of as easily. That's why the fans don't kick and scream until they're all gone.

With national teams, firing them all and starting anew is totally doable, hence the openly hateful attitude. Also, in NHL, you kinda progress towards the realization your team will blow this year and there will be no playoffs for you. And if you make the post-season, it again gives you a couple of games each series to grow accustomed to the fact you're getting squashed.

At WCH, you look great one game and then you're gone and forgotten because you lose the other. It's all way more sudden and ball-crunching and spirit-destroying.

If you look at the fact how arrogant some Russians like Kucherov conducted themselves at the tournament, I have got to say they totally deserve the fan backlash they got for not even beating Finland (with only NHL player on the roster). If you factor in that pretty much all of their avalible star players report every year they should dominate this tournament anually. Yet they seem to find a way to screw it up more often than not.

Why do people act like Ovechkin has never done anything for Team Russia? Sure, this tournament is not the first time when he has failed but he has been selected to the WC all star team twice and Olympic all star team team once. He is also 3x gold medalist and captain of the WC2014 team when they won gold etc.
