In honor of OV tying Gretzky's record tonight, I have to bust out my Great 8 rookie card. Had one of his best high end rookie cards but sold it several years ago which I regret.

Yep. The fact that Ovechkin has scored 894 in one less game is mind boggling. I don’t care in what game Gretzky scored 894 in.

He played in 1487 games and finished with 894 games.

Ovechkin is at the same 894 in 1 less game in a much harder era to score in.

Will be irrelevant though when he finishes with 900 + career goals.

Agreed. Leonard scored right after the faceoff, but the only reason Ovi went back on the ice in the game is because Chicago put their goalie back in, which I thought was classy by Chicago because they knew Ovi wasn't going to want to break the record on an ENG. Seemed to me they were throwing a carrot to the fans and Ovi since normally with that much time left 2 goals down you pull the goalie again.

The top two all-time goal scorers from two very different eras scoring their 894th goal within a game of each other is absolutely wild. I'm not smart enough to know how to do the statistical probability of such a thing, if it's even possible, but the odds have to be incredibly remote for that happening.

The all-time scoring list has officially changed and did it in one less game so he is the GOAT in goal scoring. Even if he don't break any tie, he is the GOAT. Total point is irrelevant because it is dependent on others ability to finish any passes. What a historic moment. What's more it is the game winning goal.

Is it weird to have just watched Gretzky’s all-time goals record get tied and still feel like the hockey world missed out on witnessing something? As absolutely bonkers as this accomplishment is, I also find it kind of sad that we’re probably not going to get to see the NHL’s first ever 1000 goal scorer due to the lockouts and the pandemic.

I know what you mean but it's kinda like TED WILLIAMS missing 3 years of his prime and still carving out 500 homers and cementing his greatness. To me, OV missing those games in his prime just amplifies his remarkable feat even more. Just my opinion.

And who knows, he may still get to 1000. Could pull a Brady/Jagr and play well into his 40s.

If you had told me Ovechkin would match Gretzky's career total, I would have been SURE he took at least 100 extra games to get there. The fact that he's played 1 less game in his career than Gretzky did in his AND matched his career game total is absolutely bonkers.
