If I were in attendance I would want to see it. No shame in being scored on by the literal highest goal scorer of all time.

Plus, he could score and the Islanders still win the game.

I think it’s for the better. A regular record-breaking goal would just be more wholesome.

If Rod keeps the same goalie rotation, it’ll be against Carolina. Kotchetkov has looked VERY shaky in his last 4-5 games, and there’s no shot OV doesn’t end that game with at least one.

The hardest thing to wrap my head around right now is the fact that 47% of Ovechkin’s career goals (419 out of 894) have been scored after he turned 30.

He's absolute freak of nature in the best of ways, and we'll not see his like again.

People are just posting the total number of goals and games played for both players.

Gretzky didn't score in his last eight NHL games. He beat Ovechkin to 894, but Ovechkin can hit 895 in 1487 (one more than Gretzky scored in the same number of games).

He's still playing at a high level. He may go after 1000 goals.

I want #895 to be a Michigan goal just to besmirch Gretzky.

Looked like he wanted to make it a rare wrap-around goal but couldn't pull it off.

I don't think he has many of those in his career. I don't remember ever seeing him score one.

True. But he often gets over the boards if Caps win a faceoff in these situations. He clearly didn’t want to break the record with an empty-netter.

Agreed. Leonard scored right after the faceoff, but the only reason Ovi went back on the ice in the game is because Chicago put their goalie back in, which I thought was classy by Chicago because they knew Ovi wasn't going to want to break the record on an ENG. Seemed to me they were throwing a carrot to the fans and Ovi since normally with that much time left 2 goals down you pull the goalie again.

He already has a goal like this in his career. Interestingly, it was scored in the same game when scored THE goal. So, it just won’t be as original as you think

Is it weird to have just watched Gretzky’s all-time goals record get tied and still feel like the hockey world missed out on witnessing something? As absolutely bonkers as this accomplishment is, I also find it kind of sad that we’re probably not going to get to see the NHL’s first ever 1000 goal scorer due to the lockouts and the pandemic.
