Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Passed some guy named Wayne, now NHL goalscoring leader (895 !!!)

He won’t go for 1000 IMO, but the only member of the 900 goal club sounds pretty sweet.

Also interesting would be if he could catch 99 for the most goals including playoffs (1016)…currently at 966. He’s got 58 games left to do it in the same amount as Gretz.

Honestly it has to be tempting though.

I knew Ovie was going to do it this year, even with the injury. The guy has been possessed.

Insane to think he would've been a lock for 1,000 goals had it not been for the lockouts and covid.

Over/under on Ovechkin's soon-to-be record lasting at least 31 years? (I'll take over).
Seems pretty daunting for any active player. Would take a crazy run from Matthews, Draisaitl, Pastranak, MacKinnon, McDavid, etc. to get there based on where they are right now. The younger guys now just below those ones aren’t really at a level right now where it’s realistic to expect someone to score a bunch. Probably would need to be a guy that hasn’t started yet which is likely another good 20+ years from now at the earliest. Impossible to know what another decade of draft prospects looks like but I think you’d take the over.

Agreed. It's well documented that Howe came out of retirement to play with Mark and Marty. The point I was trying to make is Gretzky probably would have found a way to push himself past alternate-reality Howe, even if Howe had pushed his total up to 900 or 950. Hopefully Ovechkin puts some distance between himself and #894, just to make it tougher for any future challengers.

All Gretzky needed for a ton more goals is for someone to go back in time and convince Gary Suter to do something other then hockey.

Unlikely anyone gets there. You need a freakish peak and/or major longevity along with the game continuing to be fairly free wheeling and less physical like it has the past while.. major accomplishment by Ovi here.

OV might be the GOAT at avoiding hits or overpowering incoming hits or devastating counterhits like no one ever
His awareness of the oppo coming for him was incredible the 1st 10 seasons or so

HF OV haters here bitd had the mantra of "just wait, OV's gonna get smoked soon" and it took 20 years and a "random" collision to take him out for all of 16 games

Legend.

It does seem pretty likely to me that this record will hold for at least as long as Gretzky and Howe’s reign combined (62 years). Matthews is the only one with a chance and it’s not the greatest one.

Assuming Matthews fails, no one else currently in the league being capable, no one in the near pipeline being capable, and 10-20 years minimum of a new threat entering the league, it seems destined to stand for quite awhile.

Well, to be realistic, by 1992, Wayne stopped being an elite goal scorer.
88/89 - 54 goals
89/90 - 40 goals
90/91 - 41 goals
91/92 - 31 goals
92/93 - 16 goals in 45 games following recovery from that Suter hit.
93/94 - 38 goals
then the lockout
94/95 - 11 in 48 games
Then he was down to 20 something goal seasons.

No Suter hit, probably 15-20 more goals in 92/93 from 16 to 30-35

Something that Ovy would surpass.

Mario with good health (back and cancer), if he could have played 1400 games would have passed Wayne pre lost work stoppage season. Mario had 690 goals in 917 games. Only 205 from breaking it. Give him 500 more games in his late 20's to mid 30's when he battled back injuries and cancer, he'd have over 900 and maybe a chance to hit 1,000 goals.

Ovy same thing. Lost 82 games after his draft for the work stoppage. Another 34 games in 12/13 for another workstoppage. He was on a .67 Goals per game pace that year, so at that page could have had 22 more had they played the extra 34 games. Lowest goal total for him was 46 during his first several years in the NHL. So, playing 04/05, probably scores 40. He could be 60-65 goals more right now and be into the 955 range or more. Would need another 40 goal season to hit 1,000 at age 40 though...

Yeah he’s said he’ll play out his contract but after that he’s headed home to Russia and will sign with his old club Dynamo Moscow starting with the ‘26-‘27 season.

So next year will be his last in the NHL.
As a long time Caps fan next season will be both awesome and emotional: it will be an Ovie farewell tribute / handshake every time he plays a team for the last time. The kind of thing you only ever see when it's a HOF lock and one of the all time greats.

The big question is....will tv networks broadcast the game tomorrow afternoon? You know every hockey fan will want to watch live.

Some respect needs to be given to the forgotten players of long ago. Joe Malone is my favourite. Just imagine if seasons and careers were longer at the turn of the 20th century?

His career stats 123 games played, 179 goals. This includes his 1917-1918 year when he potted 44 goals in just 20 games.

He also had 5 goals in his very first NHL game, not even Matthews did that. :)

Ovechkin opens NHL on TNT tripleheader one shot away from passing Gretzky
Alex Ovechkin
tallied twice to tie Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history Friday and needs one more to complete The Gr8 Chase when the Capitals (49-18-9, 107 points) clash with the Islanders (33-32-10, 76 points) during today’s NHL on TNT tripleheader opener. The game is also available on Max, truTV, Sportsnet 360 (and Sportsnet+), TVA Sports and MNMT.

* Ovechkin has scored three goals against the Islanders which have propelled him ahead of a player during his climb within the top 10 on the League’s all-time list – all against Semyon Varlamov, who has been sidelined since Nov. 29, 2024. They took place on Jan. 18, 2020 (passed Mario Lemieux for 10th), March 16, 2021 (passed Phil Esposito for 6th) and March 15, 2022 (passed Jaromir Jagr for 3rd).

* Ovechkin has scored at least one goal against an NHL-record 182 different goaltenders but has yet to beat Ilya Sorokin (4 SOG in 3 GP). Gretzky’s 894th and final goal was the first he ever scored versus Wade Flaherty, who was playing for the Islanders at the time.

* Ovechkin has scored at least one goal in all four of his appearances on TNT telecasts this season (1 on April 2, 1 on March 5, 3 on Feb. 23 and 1 on Oct. 23, 2024) and 128 of his 894 career goals in games with a local start time of 5 p.m. or earlier. His 128 career tallies in matinees are the most in League history and 16 more than the next-closest player (Teemu Selanne: 112).

* Ovechkin can record a goal streak of at least five contests for the 16th time in his career and tie Gretzky for the second most in League history behind only Lemieux (17x). Ovechkin can post his second run of that length this season (also 5 GP from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6, 2024), which would make him the first player in NHL history with multiple five-game streaks at age 39 or older – the only others with one are Brett Hull (7 GP from Nov. 26 to Dec. 8, 2003) and Johnny Bucyk (6 GP from Dec. 10-19, 1974).
