The ironic part is Kirk Muller is now a assistant coach for the capitals

Anyone think OV could somehow get 9 more in 6 games to hit 50 for a 10th time?!
i do. all season has been a push to the record. can't afford a letdown, so the push to 900, then the push to 50. then playoffs start, 19 goals in a single playoff is the current record.

*20 playoff goals would put him 6th all time (92), glenn anderson has 93.

*bossy is 6th all time with 85, but the 13 goals to catch him wouldn't set the single playoff record.

caps have had so much fun & success with this chase and they can keep feeding into it. i think they should. results have been fantastic so far.

8 goals away from top 10 all time playoff goals. 11 goals from passing rocket for 8th place. these short endorphin rushes everywhere right now.

This season could have gone so terribly wrong, easily with the injuries. No one expected the Capitals to be this good, young palyers having breakout years, good smart additions, good coaching. It's all come together at the right time.

I do wonder if the injury helped him, pushed him and just let him chill a bit.

I am not his biggest fan but man that's awesome to see. Especially the way he did it at his age is amazing. Hats off to an unbelievable accomplishment. Not many would have thought that someone would be able to break the goal scoring record.

Congrats Ovi. Hope he gets 'the' goal on home ice.

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was having to use era-adjusted goals as the crux of my arguments on message boards/reddit to defend the opinion of Ovi being the best goal scorer of all time. Now I don't need to use era-adjusted at all, and that feels pretty damn good

Strap in for the long haul if you care enough. Never honorable to dunk on previous generations or all time greats but still.

Hockey has gone through a couple, likely a few, iterations of play since the early 2000s and remaining consistently good - scoring / defense / goaltending, whatever through these eras in particular is added weight to any of these incredible stat lines.

There will always be next up and comers to have their own fan fare... okay but it's often without context. Skating around in a league where there might be one big hit on any given night / where scoring is elevating again / where goaltending is experiencing a low point / and where most teams sort of play the same game - it's just different than it was a decade or three ago. Hell fans go bonkers over a hold or trip that would be openly ignored not long ago. I think we're in a unique phase where skaters have the tools/tech/and style to move and score a bit more freely than even a decade ago. Watch some playoff games from any time before 2018 even and it's just different. Ovi is going to get some heat for some things but not enough credit for finding the back of the net through all of it. I'm a big Sid fan so there's bias here but I feel that the torches are being passed a bit too freely here to a generation that's basically one dimensional -> wide open hockey.

Shame he was robbed of most 50 goal seasons this year as well
I think all the greats that holds or near a record all have what if season due to injuries or other thinga that happened. Even The Great One have some what if?

What Ovie is doing is a testiment to already legendary career .

He is one of the players beside Crosby i cheer for from players not on my favorite team.

I think i have to pick new players soon though 😅 as these two are near retirement.

But Gretzky did it in less games at a point in the past (less games). Serious response. That's not the important mark, in my opinion. Gretzky went scoreless in x games (8?) before retiring.
Played over 165 minutes in those final 8 games with 14 shots on net.

Gretzky was done by then.

He only had 3 goals in his final 40 career games.

Ovechkin tallies twice to tie Gretzky for most goals in NHL history
Alex Ovechkin
scored his 893rd and 894th career goals to tie Wayne Gretzky for the most in League history and move to the brink of becoming the NHL’s all-time leader, a distinction Gretzky held alone for more than 31 years. Ovechkin needs one goal over the Capitals’ final six games to complete The Gr8 Chase and achieve a feat once believed to be unreachable.

* Ovechkin opened the scoring just 3:52 into the game and tallied again during the third period, triggering teammates to clear the Washington bench and embrace him for the historic occasion. Ovechkin’s first goal extended his League record for most career 40-goal seasons (14), while the second stood as his 136th game winner which moved him past Jaromir Jagr (135) for the most in NHL history.

* #NHLStats will deliver a unique Stats Pack after each Ovechkin goal through the record-breaking No. 895. Click on the links below to read the two from Friday – some highlights from both documents include a list of goaltenders that both Ovechkin and Gretzky have scored against, Ovechkin recording his League-record 35th career four-game goal streak and needing exactly half the games as Gretzky to go from No. 800 to 894.

Gretzky on hand to celebrate Ovechkin’s 893rd and 894th career goals
Wayne Gretzky
was in attendance at Capital One Arena on Friday and celebrated Alex Ovechkin’s historic night alongside NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman as well as Capitals chairman Ted Leonsis. Gretzky is expected to be on hand at each of Washington’s games until Ovechkin breaks the record.

* Gretzky spoke to Al Koken after Ovechkin scored his 894th career goal and posed for a photo in the Capitals’ locker room with Ovechkin, who was given the NHL record-tying puck by head coach Spencer Carbery. Gretzky then joined Ovechkin during a post-game news conference at Capital One Arena.
