Not to pick on the kid or anything, but I hardly noticed Bedard in this game. Noticed him a bit toward the end.

It was a good chance for him to put on a show with so much of the hockey world focusing on that game.
He got the penalty that led to the record tying goal so he did have a part in history.
He needs a couple years and will be a great player but for now he is learning just as Gretzky learned how to be classy from Gordie Howe.
I hope Ovi will do likewise but doubt anyone gets close to the record again.

All due respect to Gretzky, but he hit 894 as a shell of himself on a terrible team. This version of 894 is on a different level and it’s wonderful.
Agree, but in fairness to Gretzky his hitting "894" was a non-event. He broke the record by scoring his 802nd goal, in a season in which he won the scoring title. So, although he was almost three years past his prime when he broke it (March '94), he was still the top scoring player in the NHL at the time, which Ovechkin is not.

That being said, I agree with your general point that it is much more special (and rare) to break these kinds of records when your team is doing well. This is one reason (there are others) I was not that excited when Gretzky scored the 802 back in 1994. The Kings sucked, the owner was heading to prison (player checks were literally bouncing), and Gretzky was unhappy and past his prime.

As I said a few years ago, a lot of Ovechkin's potential towards breaking the 894 record would depend on how good the Caps were. The organization deserves a tremendous amount of credit for re-tooling and developing young players in excellent fashion. They clinched a playoff spot weeks ago, meaning they can just help Ovi go for the record with nothing to worry about. And, of course, Ovechkin's physical endurance is unfathomable.

This speaks to how myopic a lot of fans were during 2008-2017 era. Lots of HF threads arguing that low scoring meant the players were “better” and it was impossible for anyone to hit scoring records in such a high quality environment (as opposed to it being a matter of talent shortage).

The league was overdue for expansion. Superstars can shine when the depth of teams is reduced.

Get-in-the-door prices for remaining games, two tickets on Stubhub:

Home vs Blackhawks - $116
Road @ Islanders - $127
Home vs Hurricanes - $212
Road @ Blue Jackets - $117
Home vs Blue Jackets - $193
Road @ Islanders - $61
Road @ Penguins - $125

These are actually a lot lower than I expected. Granted it’s not a guarantee that you get THE game, but this the kind of opportunity that comes along maybe once in a generation or two (we already know it won’t happen again in the next 20 years or so)

What are we looking at for Sunday's game now? :D

Looks like $1,089 for a pair.

That’s all fair, and re-framed in this context I guess I’m saying Gretzky’s 894 actually didn’t mean all that much. Ovechkin’s 894 doesn’t just eclipse him, but overshadows him, and I don’t think it’s disrespectful to acknowledge that.

894 in what almost seems like a semi-prime season at age 39, leading his first place team, damn near leading the entire league, is just a different caliber of goal scorer altogether.

Notthing to do with each other. Gretzky had more impact as a 17 year old among men than Bedard ever will.

Greatness appreciates greatness. Besides, he'll always have the single regular season goal record and the all time points record and the numerous other unbreakable records he has.
I know this triggers some people but in my mind Gretzky is the greatest athlete of all time. Which is why Ovechkin beating his goal record is so spectacular and he did it against real goalies.

In fairness, Wayne is probably shitfaced as usual and doesn’t even know where he is at
