Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Passed some guy named Wayne, now NHL goalscoring leader (895 !!!)

Ovi scored 41 goals in 60 games and missed 16 games this season.

I wonder does he score 50 goals this season if there was no injury?

Have to remember that Ovi was leading the NHL in goals and was rolling when he got injured. No telling how many he would have scored had he stayed healthy. Just incredible that he bounced back from a broken leg during the season and still managed to get 40+ goals, and at his age.

If you had told me Ovechkin would match Gretzky's career total, I would have been SURE he took at least 100 extra games to get there. The fact that he's played 1 less game in his career than Gretzky did in his AND matched his career game total is absolutely bonkers.

Yup and the competition is so much better in OV's era what with the size, strength and mobility of the defensemen and the agility and superior positioning of the goalies. I really did think Gretzky's record was unbreakable.

OV is just a machine that can't be reasoned with. He can't be bargained with and absolutely would not stop, until he breaks 99's goal record.

Needless to say, he won't break Gretzky's goal scoring record.

2 goals in 10 games is simply brutal by his standard. The russian machine might actually be broken.

Not to pick on the kid or anything, but I hardly noticed Bedard in this game. Noticed him a bit toward the end.

It was a good chance for him to put on a show with so much of the hockey world focusing on that game.

Man, that’s so true. I’ve been arguing with Caps fans for the past 48 hours, but hard feelings aside I’m SO happy this is all happening in the context of Ovie being a beast and the Caps being a wagon and it all meaning something.

All due respect to Gretzky, but he hit 894 as a shell of himself on a terrible team. This version of 894 is on a different level and it’s wonderful.

Today Ovechkin hit two milestones, and since his other milestone threads (catching Selanne/Messier/Lemieux/Yzerman and scoring 700 career goals) have run their course, I decided I would make a new one, since more milestones are coming up with high probability.

With his second goal tonight, Ovechkin became the first player in history with 11 seasons of 45 or more goals. The closest ones are Gretzky and Bossy (9 seasons), Lemieux and Dionne are at 8, there is nobody with exactly 7 45-goal seasons, and then there is a group with 6 such seasons (Yzerman, Lafleur, Esposito, Goulet, Gartner...

With two goals today (#746 and #747), Ovechkin passed Brendan Shanahan in career points and became #3 in career points among LWs and #26 in career points overall.

Ovechkin is also just one goal away from becoming the all-time leader in career PP goals.

And now we are in the fifth thread, on a day when Ovechkin
- tied the Gretzky record (having played one game less in his career)
- moved to the sole possession of career GWG record (136, Jagr is now #2 at 135)
- added to his record of 40-goal seasons (14 in his career, Gretzky has 12, Lemieux and Dionne have 10, everyone else 9 or less)
- added to his PPG record (324, #2 is Andreychuk who is whopping 50 goals behind)

Five years ago, when I started the first thread, I would think a day like this is a wild dream.

So with everyone on the Blackhawks congratulating Ovechkin tonight and Gretzky and Bettman in attendance, can someone please tell me why Russia can't join international hockey tournaments? It's pretty clear the hockey community doesn't care about the politics behind the ban. And does anyone really feel these tournaments are the same without Russia?
