24 to go

Gretzky scored empty betters but did so without floating behind the other team and leaving his team shorthanded.

Big difference.
Gretzky scored 73 SHG goals and had 149 SHP
Ovy 5 SHG and one assisst

its not a specially seen stat, what i mean to show is players and eras are so differnt, was the drivers of formula 1 in the 50s better oe worse than now? who would win, todays cars or yesterdays? would the 50s driver beat todays driver if they changed cars..?

The moment Gretzky scored 802:
Gretzky - 49 ENG
Howe - 12 ENG

So I don't see a problem with extra ENGs for Ovi. He's not the first to do this.
i dont understand this at all, a goal is a goal, this is hockey, not figure skating where people get judged by others how "pretty and perfect" the thing is performed, maybe it should be a differt section, where people can "rate" goals.. i donno know

Cheers Guys, happy new !!

OV regains Caps lead in goals with his 17G.
He leads Caps in goals in ALL 20 seasons.
Not sure who is in distant second place all-time, maybe Bossy with 10, Bobby and Gretz also around 10, who else? Who could come up with a nice table?

Ove is already the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. Look at the goaltenders in the late 70s and 80s. They were flopping around the crease because the position wasn't well understood until the early 90s. Aside from age, that's a large reason Gretzky's point totals went down.

You have to be kidding me. Guy gets his leg broken while leading the league in goals. 39 year old somehow comes back after missing only 16 games and starts playing NHL hockey again. Scores a goal in each of his first two games back. Russian machine not letting anything stop his party.

Did he announce he's retiring? I would expect him to continue playing and potentially get closer to 1000 goals by the time he's done.
He said it multiple times in the interviews that he finds it harder and harder to prepare for new seasons and the goal record on the current contract is his main motivation

I bet some people unironically think when Gretzky and Lemieux put up big totals it was solely in pursuit of helping the team win and when Ovechkin puts up big totals it’s because he’s selfish and greedy, and that if Gretzky and Lemieux were selfish and greedy like Ovechkin they’d 1.5X their stats but have zero Stanley Cups.

Like I think that’s an actual thing that a not insignificant number of otherwise well functioning adults genuinely believe in their hearts.

Gretzkys era wasn’t as impressive as you old heads think it is.

One of the reasons I’m extremely at peace with him breaking the record is that if we’re completely and totally honest, a lot of Gretzky’s record had to do with context. He played on the most firewagon offensive powerhouse of all time, at the absolute peak era of offense in league history. Whereas Ovechkin played on a pretty ordinary group of teams in a mostly quite low scoring era.

Statistically speaking it was flat-out harder for Ovechkin to do this than it was for Gretzky, even if you hold a high level of respect for 80s hockey. And the possibility of Ovechkin doing it in fewer games is absolutely mind-boggling. Like I never would have thought that would have been a remote possibility, it seemed that someone would have to Marleau their way to this record someday. For a modern era great to not just outscore but also outpace a guy who played from 79-99 is just absolutely astonishing.
