Was thinking whether McDavid could reach 500 goals faster than Ovi, who did it in 801 games. McDavid has 237 games till 800. 200 goals in 237 games would be a 69 goal pace. That's a really tough ask as the ongoing season might end up his goal scoring peak and the chances of hitting 69 -- while obviously nice -- are on the smaller side. That's also not the most enticing pace-milestone there is. What a machine Ovi was and still is!

A machine is the right way to describe him. Over his career he’s scored 822 goals in 1,344 games which is a 50 goal pace. To put it another way, he has maintained a 50 goal pace through almost 18 seasons which to me is just insane. The durability and consistency is crazy and what sets him apart.

McDavid is amazing as well. Have never seen anyone who makes NHL players look like beer leaguers on such a consistent basis. I think he’ll hit 500 closer 850-870 games but I won’t rule anything out with him. 850-870 games would mean 200 more goals in 287-307 games which is a 57-53 goal pace. Those numbers seem a bit more realistic to me but who knows.

He's had a few injuries this year.(age?) I think he's almost guaranteed to get to 895 but I think the 1000 goal talk is a bit crazy.

Extremely impressive! I know people don't like Hockeyreferences adjusted stats, but even if they're not perfect, I think they're still much more useful than pure raw stats.

Ovechkin is currently #1 all-time in adjusted goals, and #10 all-time in adjusted points. Unless he has a career ending injury, he will finish #1 all-time in adjusted goals, and #5 all-time in adjusted points.

Remarkable.

Yes it's far better than the raw stats.
Still don't get it when people put him outside the top 10 all-time. He didn't have any award winning support through his career like BossyTrottier, MarioJagr, SidMakin, McDrai but still managed to climb to the top

Nah, not a "few" and nothing concerning. He missed 9 games this season. 4 were to attend his father's funeral. 3 were the last 3/4 games of the season when caps had nothing to play for and were in tank mode. So he basically missed 2 games. Would have scored 50 again if not for unfortunate circumstances beyond his control.

This season marks Ovechkin's 15th top10 finish in goals.
Only Gordie Howe has more top10 finishes (19). Richard has 14, Bobby Hull has 13.
Of those who played post-expansion, nobody even has 10 top10 finishes (Gretzky and Lemieux have 9 each, so do Esposito, Dionne and Robitaille; Jagr, Hull Jr., Kovalchuk have 8)

You know adjusted stats are wonky when Ovechkin, who hasn’t ranked top 10 in scoring over the past 8 seasons of his career, is a top 5 scorer a mere 6 times and a top 10 scorer 9 times through 18 seasons and is unlikely to add to those over the remaining 3 seasons of his career will be #5 all-time in adjusted points.

Ever heard of longevity?

So adjusted stats say he’s a compiler then? That doesn’t make sense either right?
You’re saying words but missing a point. You say adjusted points are nonsense because Ovechkin is 10th but he’s 16th unadjusted points so it’s not like it’s just some made up numbers.

They’re not made up and I understand their purpose, but I think it’s a bit much when we talk about them like they’re fact.
