Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894 (891 and counting)

I still can't believe that Ovechkin at 39 years old is 6th in the league in goals despite missing 16 games this season with a broken leg.

6th in goals
2nd in goals/gp
1st in goals/60 (strong lead over Drai at #2)
1st in ESG/60 (24% higher than #2 Thompson)
the amazing part is the haters. for all those calling him the one trick pony, empty net/power player merchant you cannot deny that what he has done at 39? years old, with missing whatever amount of games, is amazing. He would be challenging Drai if not for the injury. That either says something about Ovi or something about the state of the rest of the goal scorers in the league.

Old man since last year's ASG break.

PS
How many goals OV missed by not taking those ASG breaks and resting or by being suspended for skipping ASG?
It is hard to tell, but what we could probably calculate is how many his goals were overturned by coach's challenges (which did not exist in the past). Is this info captured in game logs or other jsons somewhere?

I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but I think this makes it even more mind boggling:

Gretzky: 1487 games played, 894 goals
Ovechkin: 1483 games played, 890 goals

Given how much more difficult it is to score goals in Ovechkin’s era than it was in Gretzky’s, the fact that he’s going to get the record in roughly the same number of games is truly wild. It would be really neat to see him tie or surpass #99 in his 1487th career game.

If you want to know how much more difficult scoring was during Ovechkin's career, since 05-06 the Capitals have played 1558 games and scored 4795 goals.

During Gretzky's career, his teams played 1587 games and scored 6522 goals.

So we're talking about over 1700 more goals scored by Gretzky's teams than by the Capitals over about the same number of games.

That’s insane. So Gretzky’s teams scored over a goal per game more on average than Ovechkin’s did. I’m no statistician, but just looking at Hockey Reference’s era adjusted all-time goals list and assuming their model is at least somewhat sound, it would appear that Gretzky is closer to Crosby’s level in terms of goal scoring prowess than he is to Ovechkin’s:

Based on this, I am not sure Ovie would want to score 895 as an ENG

If he's at 894 in that game against the Penguins and the Capitals are up by a goal late in the game with the Penguins net empty and he has a chance to take a shot at the open net or pass to Protas (or Strome or whoever), does he take the shot?

I definitely would... just for the lulz (it would be too tempting to have Penguins fans freak out over their team being the one to concede the record-breaking goal and over an empty net goal).

I believe we will not see Ovechkin on the ice for an empty net chance if #894 and #895 are in play.

I'm going by what I heard Carbery saying a couple of weeks ago.

I get the idea of not wanting to tie or break the record on an ENG, but if it's the last game of the season and there's a chance of an ENG to tie or break the record I think he should go for it. You never know what the future brings. Have to strike when possible for such a momentous record. Fingers crossed he gets the record before the last game since I understand the sentiment of wanting to avoid ENGs to tie or break the record.

That's incredible irony. Hope Ovi gets it playing 1 more game then Wayne.

BTW - debate era's all ya want, Gretzky was grab, raped, pulled down, and spit on during those years, and it was legal back then. Mario threatened to quit the game after every rough period, it was so bad with the clutch and grab.
