That's a .555 goals per game pace.5 goals in 9 games. If anyone can do that, it's Ovechkin
Since he returned from his injury he has 22 goals in 39 games which is a .564 goals per game pace.

Much respect, man. Two generational greats that have been with their franchises the entire time. From a person who was born into Pittsburgh everything, meaning I'm not exactly a Washington fan lol, Ovechkin is without a doubt the greatest goal scorer of all time and top 10 player ever. I've really grown to appreciate how dominant Ovi has been at putting pucks in the net, on a historical scale.
The longevity really does it for me. If not for the knee injury, he's probably a 50 goal scorer at 39. Add that to the durability and the career is extremely impressive. For a guy who plays a hard game, he's held up as well as anyone in league history, over a 2 decade stretch.
I hope Sid and Ovi can somehow get 1 more showdown in the postseason before they both decide to hang them up, but given the state of the Pens now, I'm not putting any money on that happening.
Regardless, 8 will be getting a big round of applause from this Pens faithful when the record falls and he eventually decides to retire. Legendary career.
He has $9.5 million reasons to return and finish his contract. What happens if he ties the record and the caps win the cup? Is he really gonna come back just for one goal?
That grind is a lot, especially on a 39 year old.He has $9.5 million reasons to return and finish his contract.
Plus under your scenario, he'd also want one last kick at a third Cup
No doubt but a winning environment helps a lot to keep him rejuvenated. That grind is a lot, especially on a 39 year old.

LOL, I see what you did there. Rod w/the no cap is crazy, looking back at it!
Yes. But also he'd be another 5 goals from becoming the only guy with 900.What happens if he ties the record and the caps win the cup? Is he really gonna come back just for one goal?
I still can't believe that Ovechkin at 39 years old is 6th in the league in goals despite missing 16 games this season with a broken leg.
6th in goals
2nd in goals/gp
1st in goals/60 (strong lead over Drai at #2)
1st in ESG/60 (24% higher than #2 Thompson)
10 to 900Full list of OV countdowns for those confused
5 to break Gretz record
4 to tie Gretz record
3 to update NHL record for 40 goals seasons to 14
2 ESG to tie Howes for 2nd all-time
1 GWG to break Jagrs record
As good of a season as you can ask for at 29. Absolutely absurd the amount of people trying to downplay this man's legacy the closer he gets.5 v 5
2nd in the NHL in goals/60
8th in in the NHL in points/60
As good of a season as you can ask for at 39.
Honestly just incredible stuff from Ovi...
he's also got the second highest point per game ever for a player aged 39 in a season (only behind Howe)
Also, only 2 goals away from the most goals ever from a 39 year old
