His career back then would see him with less rockets but obviously crazier numbers. He’d have led the league in goals four times and have the single season record with 94. He’d have twelve seasons of 100 or more points good for second all time behind Gretzky’s 15. He would top out at 162 points which would be the best non Gretzky/Lemieux season of the era (and of all time). He’d end his career the all time leader in goals by a massive margin and all time leader in goals per game. He would end up second all time in points with 2,036 (821 behind Wayne Gretzky). Would end up 5th all time in points per game.
As for being the best player ever he’d still not be remotely close as Gretzky would have him beat in single season points off of assists alone (163 assists in 1986) as well as the gargantuan gap in total career points. The disparity in their best seasons and overall trophy cases would see them as non competitive at all. Ovechkin would be the third best player of the era on a per game basis behind Gretzky and Mario. Ovechkin of the 80s and 90s would 100% be seen as the greatest goal scorer ever but I actually think his legacy for Hart and Rocket winning is better in the salary cap/post lockout era he is actually in. He’d have a smaller trophy case competing against Wayne Gretzky. His numbers become more gaudy but his competition gets way steeper.
Overall though the point I initially
wanted to illustrate is that he is the best goal scorer ever.
