So does the official record breaking watch start when he's 4 goals short? He already has 2 hat tricks this year, who's to say once he's that close he doesn't just go bezerk and score 4 in a game to break it? This is Ovi we're talking about...
5 goals away is when the commish and Gretzky are going to start traveling with the Caps

From an ESPN/Media stand point, they stand to do better by starting when he's 10 away. And ramp up coverage and hype with every goal

And do not forget OV missed 3 games being suspended for skipping All Star Game "Dog and Pony" shows. Should have entertained kids like his fellow (fumble)rooski Kuch :)

Remember when everyone thought his decline had begun when he only scored 33 goals in 2016-17. Ovi has scored 325 goals in 547 games since then. A pace of 48 goals per full season.
And the large number of posters who thought he was finished. A lame one trick pony. He's proved everyone wrong & confounded his critics all the time. I'll be staying up which is a rarity here in the UK along with other fans to catch the moment live.

Ovechkin’s goals adjusted year by year to Wayne Gretzky’s career. Using even strength, powerplay and shorthanded levels for each year to year conversion. Ovi’s actual season will be in brackets.

What he had done in his career would theoretically be worth 1,139 goals in the 80s and 90s. A 245 goal lead on the actual 894 Gretzky record we see today. He’d also have the all time record for goals per game while playing 20 seasons unlike Bossy’s 10. You can argue Gretzky, Hull and Lemieux for peak season goal scoring but there is nobody better than Alexander Ovechkin at goal scoring. He’s just the best we will ever see.

It's funny how Ovi is in first place, super loose, having a great time, and about to break Wayne's record. And Sid is dialed in and really angry looking all the time, and isn't even going to make the playoffs. It's all Dubas' fault.

Alex Ovechkin followed up his hat trick performance Sunday with another goal Tuesday and now sits 12 shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record (894). Should he find the back of the net again, Ovechkin would tie Howe and Teemu Selanne for the fourth-most goals by a player age 39 or older in a single season.

wow
13x 50G+ seasons
9x 60G+ seasons
6x 70G+ seasons
2x 80G+ seasons

1139 goals and how many points? 2060? Then Ovi is top 1 player of all time.

His career back then would see him with less rockets but obviously crazier numbers. He’d have led the league in goals four times and have the single season record with 94. He’d have twelve seasons of 100 or more points good for second all time behind Gretzky’s 15. He would top out at 162 points which would be the best non Gretzky/Lemieux season of the era (and of all time). He’d end his career the all time leader in goals by a massive margin and all time leader in goals per game. He would end up second all time in points with 2,036 (821 behind Wayne Gretzky). Would end up 5th all time in points per game.

As for being the best player ever he’d still not be remotely close as Gretzky would have him beat in single season points off of assists alone (163 assists in 1986) as well as the gargantuan gap in total career points. Ovechkin of the 80s and 90s would 100% be seen as the greatest goal scorer ever but I actually think his legacy for Hart and Rocket winning is better in the salary cap/post lockout era he is actually in. He’d have a smaller trophy case competing against Wayne Gretzky.

Overall though the point I initially
wanted to illustrate is that he is the best goal scorer ever.
