Would be a pretty amazing story to break the record this year and win the cup. Not sure either will come to pass, but would be cool.

I still love the idea that he gets within 1 or ties it, then just walks away as a tip of the hat to Wayne ;)
I don’t know what’s more impressive, the fact he’s looked so good or that Washington is leading the NHL in points.

He has been looking pretty bad since coming back from his injury not gonna lie. Not getting many chances at all, limping a little bit right now, but still scoring some.
But how many times havent he looked like this only to turn it around and all of a sudden look great again? He did it last season, he did it this season already where he didnt look that great first couple of games of the season. He'll probably do it again.

He hasn’t been great recently, since coming back from his injury. I think the break for the tournament is going to be really good for him.

Luckily the team has still been putting up wins while he’s cold, they’ve really pivoted from the early season where they were blowing the doors off with offense to now being a team that is basically giving up no goals (4 goals in the last 6 games, a 1.72 GAA in January)

His haters love to complain about his empty net goals, but there's a reason Ovie is out there when the net is empty. He can put the puck in the net from almost anywhere to ice the game.
Yes, there is a reason he’s out there with the net empty but that’s not it, we should at least be honest about it. I certainly don’t want him to break the record with an empty net goal, but not a hater that cares too much about it. The old saying is “no pictures on the scoresheet”…goal is a goal.

Here’s the thing though…he now has 6 more ENG than Gretzky…will the haters not shut up until he’s at least that much clear of Gretzky?

He is out there because he is good at scoring empty net goals. The one he scored last night is not an easy one. Look at the Oilers for example, their stars have struggled hard to put the puck into the empty net this season. It is meaningful, even if its not as meaningful as a nice goal with a goaltender in the net.

The haters can say whatever they want, the record is the record. People talking about Ovechkin limping to the record, how much did Gretzky limp? he scored 176 goals in his last 9 seasons lmao, 9 goals in his last season.
Ovechkin has 350 goals in his last 9 seasons including current one, and will end around 370 for this season. Who was actually limping?

I hear you, but haters are going to hate, you know that. I don’t think it will matter though, he’ll score enough to be clear even considering goals with goalies in net.

With Gretzky though, I don’t think he limped to any record. He’s no my favourite player, but I do recognize greatness. There is a reason his goal scoring dropped, but you can’t make excuses for him, is what it is. That said, when he broke the record, he was scoring 38 goals and winning the scoring title that year. That’s the thing here, Gretzky set so many all-time records when he was basically in his prime, it’s almost impossible to think of…to break those types of records you are thinking about guys that have to play to 40 or so any being well past prime. Also, while goal scoring decreased for Wayne, he didn’t exactly limp his last 9 years, he as still #1 in points

Yeah im not trying to discredit Gretzky at all, he is the all-time great player, limping only in terms of goalscoring in his last couple years, limping only when it comes to this topic of the goals record.
If Ovechkin had gotten close, and then scored 11, 15 ,8, 25, 23 ,9 goals in his last 6 seasons to break the record oh boy would the haters have pointed that out.

Wayne gretzky’s skill so rare and bright
doth weave his plays like stars that light the night
no master of the puck hath come so near
his genius unmatched and vision clear
Then ovie bold in his tireless quest
to score the most and rise above the rest
his shots like arows swift doth pierce the sky
and soon his name in legend should not die

Another empty net goal? Lmao 🤣
Malkin and Crosby combined in 50 games:

22 goals and -38

Ovechkin in 32 games:

22 goals and +16

Gretzky had 188 goals from age 30 until he retired.

Ovechkin is at 400 goals and counting from age 30.

My point what that people look at how many goals Gretzky was scoring when he was getting to 894....but that's not when he broke the record....he broke the record at 802.

If he was hanging around to break a goal scoring record and putting up those numbers I'd agree...would take a bit of the shine off of it. At the same time, hard to suggest he would have been hanging on too long either, last years in the league he finished 5th in scoring, 4th in scoring and then 36th (after missing 10 or so games).....I don't think he wanted to hang around to decline too much. He was only 38 and obviously could still produce, but not at the level he was comfortable with.

I'll make it clear as well....I'm not suggesting Ovechkin is limping towards the record either....he's producing goals at a high rate still....my points here are all about Gretzky. What I also want to make clear, I'm not a big Gretzky fan, in fact, I was a bit hard on him as he was the best player and so you tend to try and knock them down to make your favourite look better. That said, over time, I tend to try to defend the guy because it was incredible what he did....not suggesting you are knocking him either.

I'm also, 100% not a Pens fan so have no issues with Ovechkin (not saying all Pens fans do)

I still don’t know why this is even a consideration. Ovi has 62 ENG and Gretzky has 56. Real big difference there.
Online you find a lot of people who don't want to see Ovechkin break the record. They always seem to try and move the goal posts as well to discredit him.

Things like:

1) ENGs
2) More games to get there
3) WHA totals should count
4) Playoff goals should count
4) No 2 line offside
5) 3 on 3 OT
6) HGH, TRT, steroids, etc
7) Shot totals
8) Only scores PP goals
9) ?
10) ?
