It's also pretty crazy that Wayne missed half a season cause of the 94-95 lockout and and Ovi missed a full season and a half because of the 2004-05 complete lockout and the 2012-13 half a season lockout.

Alex probably gets to 1000 goals if that doesn't happen, something that would be hard to imagine seeing anyone ever do.

I wonder if he breaks the record this year he calls it a career? Has he said he fully plans to play next year still? It's going to be interesting now he's only 3 way.. he could do it next game, everyone's gonna be feeding him that puck especially for the assist on the last one. It would be so epic if he does it and they play "bandz a make her dance" for the goal song 😅

I dunno why it’s so hard to think someone else will do it. All they have to do is just care about scoring goals. For almost all of the really good players they just know chicks dig the secondary assist so they focus on that.

Breaking the record in style with a hattrick against Chicago. That would be something else. If not I can see it happen against the Islanders. They are done and if he goes with a goal or two missing into this game it could be them.
I remember in 2015-2016 season when he was at 47 goals with 2 games to go he scored a hatty against the Blues to reach 50 so he could have a 1 game rest before the playoffs.

Ovi also had the Covid-shortened season. If you take his average of 0.60 goals per game and multiply that over two total seasons missed of 164 games (one full season plus half lockout plus Covid), that’s 98 goals he has lost through no fault of his own. Also consider that in the 2019-20 Covid season, Ovi averaged 0.71 goals per game, well above his career average.

Assuming he didn’t suffer an injury or have a long-term suspension during those three seasons, he’d theoretically be chasing down 1,000 right now. That said, maybe if he had two more full seasons of tread on his tires, he might have slowed down by now.

Either way, enjoy what we’re watching because the player who eventually beats Ovi’s record probably isn’t alive yet.

The goalies he’s going to face in the next couple games are on full alert. Nobody wants to be the victim of historical note.
I really liked what Andersen said last game

"Have you really played in the NHL if you haven't gotten scored on by Ovi?"

I feel like this quote is underrated.

Being scored on by Ovi during his historical run is an honor in its own way.

Did anyone despise the goalie Gretz scored on his #894 or #802? Or consider as a loser? No way. But both of them have eventually become famous by having taken part in the historical run.

There’s really nothing here to be ashamed of or fear for the goalie as media tries it to make look like.

I hope when he breaks the record, he does the horse ride celly while simultaneously using his free hand to pop finger-gun shots into the air.

This leads me to a thought here.

Surely, even if just in the locker room or in his head, he's thought about how to react.

Do you have a celly for the tie and a different one for breaking it? The clips of those two goals will be played hundreds of millions of times over the next few decades.

That's a lot of pressure!

Also - I know Brian Bouchard who had the amazing #1 ovie goal scored on him in Arizona while Gretzky was coach. he was interviewed recently and wears it like a badge of honor. Goalies are weird cats and sure, maybe some may not want to be part of history. For me, if it happens it happens and I'd feel the same as Bouchard.

Covid also took a lot of games away from Ovie.

He's probably already at 1000 goals without these three factors.

I'll just do the math of games missed. 2005 lockout (82 games), 2013 lockout (34 games), 2020 covid (13 games), and 2021 covid (26 games). So he's lost out on 155 games. He'd probably be looking at 1000 goals next season.
