Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894 (892 and counting)

One trick pony ? Have you seen his goals this year ? He barely scored from his “office”, there’s been a lot of tip ins, tap ins, shots from high slot, he’s done it all this year

Perhaps it's the semantics of 'one trick pony' I don't understand. But the point is, Ovechkin was far, far more well-rounded back in the day. Younger generation of kids never got to see this.

I disagree. Yes, he’s not as fast and physical as he used to be, but his playmaking is much better now than in younger years, some might say he’s even more defensively responsible now

Who really cares. YouTube exists for these youngsters or maybe that Tik Tok app.

Does anyone expect a 40 year old from any sport to play the same way they did when they were 20?

Same reels exist for Gretzky, Lemieux, etc.

Ovechkin would have pounded in 50 goals this year at the age of 39 were it not for the injury.

Backstrom is really a borderline hall of famer, he could get in eventually.

It’s hard to value Ovi’s physicality on defense compared to Crosby’s puck winning ability, defensive zone board grinding, takeaways, and defensive awareness.

The difference in Takeaways is pretty negligible - in over 1000 games played, Crosby has 50 more. So less than once every 20 games Crosby gets an extra takeaway? Same goes for blocks. It’s just not a significant difference relative to their respective immense accomplishments.

Hits, otoh, Ovechkin gets more than 3x Crosby, and those result in the loss of the puck. So Ovie is causing people to cough up the puck twice per game more than Crosby.

I think Backstrom was a fringe case when it looked like he would age normally but his career is now over. Maybe he gets in, I dunno but I wouldn’t bet on it.

The Lemieux "what if" scenarios are always interesting to think about. He scored at a goals/game rate of .75 throughout his career. If he played as many games as Gretzky that would equal 1,121 goals. With expected drop off as he aged, it is not really that crazy to think he could have been able to reach 1,000 goals with a healthy career. Oh what could have been.
You're not even joking. 2,500+ points wasn't inconceivable either. Anytime someone asks me if Lemieux or Gretzky was better I answer Lemieux without blinking. I'm not trying to disrespect Wayne. I am just very aware that Great One has spent 40 years openly egging on and inviting anyone who can join his stratosphere and would not be the slightest bit offended if I thought Lemieux was the better of the two.

As much as I love Gretzky, I agree. In fact, I remember Gretz saying himself that they were both very similar in talent, but Mario had the frame and the reach that Wayne didn’t have.

For those following basketball, was LeBron breaking the points record a comparable achievement? Did NBA widely celebrate it ?
It was a big deal yea I don't think anyone is gonna break lebrons record. They stopped the game and had a cheesy ass ceremony. Right while Lakers were playing important games trying to make the playoffs.

I hope they don't do the same shit with Ovi. Team will congratulate him on the ice that's fine but nothing more. Save the ceremony stuff until after the game

Not really, that's likely because the GOAT(Jordan), sits at about 5th.

Comparable would be MLB home runs record or NFL most touchdowns. I remember it was huge when Barry Bonds was close to breaking Hank Aaron's record, as it was, iirc, a 35 year old record.

Disagree with this. It’s the greatest single player record to be broken in our lifetime in our sport. It needs to be celebrated when it happens.

Not during the game dude we don't need that. The LeBron record was the cheesiest thing ever & I'm sure he felt awkward hogging all the spotlight during a crucial game that his team was trying to win

Literally let the team enjoy it however they please but bettman, Gretzky, etc should not touch the ice until the final buzzer goes

724 assists, should be top 50 next season All time, thats a high number

I think so to, as I said ealier, it could very likely stand for over 100 years, and the Hockey buffs of those days, celebrating
a 100 year record, should have something good to look at, and this thread also, weird to think about it
that way (barring Nuclear war 2nd coming etc :)

Lebron loves the spotlight. So much so that he fakes injuries and flops around with the camera zoomed in. Did you not see his stomping temper tantrum?

Trust me, Ovi is going to do enough celebrating all on his own.

I still cringe when I think of his reaction to winning the Cup. It was so, idk, contrived? Over the top? Like he knew every camera in the arena was locked on him and he was going to deliver, repeatedly. Over and over.

Like he was trying desperately to capture that perfect moment that would turn into a legendary meme template on giphy.com. So yeah, I expect that x 10 when he breaks 99's record.

(And don't get me wrong, I'm not an Ovi hater and I love that he has such a genuine love & passion for the game. Maybe that's why his Cup-winning reaction was so sad, it was just not genuine? Or, you can look at my avatar and conclude that I'm just bitter because my team hasn't won anything since The Beatles were playing in every teenager's bedroom.)
