I think if we look at the numbers it would be absolutely yes:

First 23 games
19G-18A-37pts, 68 goals 131 pts pace

Last 23 games:
10G-11A-21PTS, 36 goals, 75 pts pace

For people that watch him I imagine it could feel differently and be clearly the product of an unsustainable nearly 20% shooting percentage part of a season versus an unlucky 8.7% phase without much slowing down, I do not know, but it was almost certain to happen is save percentage and is team shooting percentage when it was on the ice would have been completely out norm over a full season.

I mean yeah I guess it could be attributed to just getting back to averages, but I just think he looks different the last month or so. Injury? Fatigue after so much ice time? Age finally?

^^^All these guys showed class and congratulated Ovie as he surpassed them. Jagr will, and already has really. Gordie Howe certainly would have - as he did with Gretzky - but he has passed away. Gretzky certainly would congratulate Ovie too.

Lemieux is the only one who refused.

How else is there to interpret this other than Lemieux being the singular poor sport among them?

Are hou sure refused is the correct word here? To me it sounds like someone, say the NHL, urged him to congratulate and Mario just goes nah, not gonna do that. The alternative just being that he didn't pay much attention to that and didn't feel like writing a tweet. There's some nuance there.

He’ll be fine. Yes, the Covid related absence and the team around him falling apart isn’t helping, but he’s been unlucky.

Just yesterday he could’ve had two goals. He rang one of his signature one timers off the post, and he missed an open net when a centering pass from Kuznetsov hit a crack on the ice and bounced over his blade.

@HurricaneFanatic knows it’s just a matter of time before they start going in again

Very well could be some PDO involved in those numbers. Another possibility is he's playing through an ailment. He missed two consecutive practices in January following an "upper body injury" against Boston on January 10th. On the 14th when asked by reporters he confirmed that an injury in the Boston game led to the missed practices.

In the 10 games leading up to the Boston game he had 7+6 and was averaging 23:20 of ice time. In the 10 games since that Boston game he's got 5+2 and is averaging 21:07 of ice time. Take those numbers and the eye test as you will.

Alex Ovechkin unable to practice, Capitals say he has upper-body injury

Alex Ovechkin on his ‘under my body’ injury and if he’s going to the All-Star Game

I guess but alot of players get "almost goals" in every game.

i think he'll hit 50 depending on his health. I got covid and it sucked for two months. Might be the reason he's slowed down.

His ENG was quite nice too, intercepting the puck from Forsberg who was pressured by Kuznetsov, and nailing the EN from 140 ft away while falling to seal the deal. He's been able to make these interceptions consistently in the defensive zone, and it makes sense to use the best shot in the league to hit the empty net from far away.

They all count the same on the scoreboard regardless, I'm hoping he gets 10 more of these ;)

Hey kudos to Lavi. He’s at least committed to getting Ovechkin the goal scoring record.

Considering he’s playing Ovi in those positions and him being one of the worst defensive forwards on their team.

Capital fans should be happy for that.

I'm stoked about it, he sealed many games this year and I cannot recall a single game where it backfired. Ovi scores and the team wins, I can't think of a better outcome all around ;)

Wait, you're saying here that he intercepts passes in the defensive zone, but he's supposed to be awful defensively?

Ovi's so good that he makes good defensive plays even though he's awful decensively :D

It's true that Ovi is one of the worst forwards defensively on the team. But considering that he has the BEST shot in the league and can easily score from his own zone, Lavi's decision to play Ovi in these situations is quite practical. In fact, Lavi demands from his players to shoot the puck as soon as it is intercepted. Even at the expense of possible icing. But you probably weren't aware of this since you are not a Caps fan.
