Strome's played pretty well and so was Mantha while he was here. Wilson's done his share too.

Idk man, doing the math on time missed for Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Oshie, and Wilson - and now Mantha gone as well - fairly remarkable that they’re right there in the playoff mix. Management treated the deadline as a complete rebuild and still they refuse to try to secure a high draft pick.

You know players don't tank, right? You really think the coach tells them all to just f*** around and not bother trying so they can lose games and get a better draft position?

It is still 53 goals to reach the record and become the greatest goal scorer of all time. 54 gives him sole possession of the record.
I have to reassess it when I come back home from Massachusetts but I do think you're right about the sole possession. Ovi has been good amassing that many and I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge how much it impresses me and even the missus, the old lass. I guess what has defined him is the blissful lack of classlessness, he sure is an utter success in his profession.

On a sidenote, it's difficult to express how key it is to also discuss his passing prowess as in a few games he surpasses another Russian legend in assists (694 Ovi vs. 696 Fedorov) and I assume other than the most passionate enthusiasts are likely to miss it. In essence, though, he's an assassin, professed expressively by countless assaults and missiles from the face off dot.

Due to its messiness I must confess I was pondering if this message is actually issuable but those thoughts were dismissed as one must display assertiveness even in one's transgressions although courteousness is also an essential and downright necessary asset.

I think he'll end up with about 25 goals this season. He would then need 48 more to break the record. He should be able to manage 48 goals across the next two seasons barring injury. I say he breaks the record very late in the 2025-2026 season. I can't wait for the threads and discussions on sports networks and such. The moment will be absolutely historic.

Ovechkin will not become the greatest goal scorer of all time (obviously a subjective thing, anyway) the moment he reaches goal 895. If he is the greatest of all time, then he already is. Nothing a player does at Ovechkin's stage in his career is important to their 'ranking'.

What Ovi's reaching 895 would be is a nice media-hype for the NHL – a chance for it to be on the top of sports' broadcasts around the world and on the front-page of sports news worldwide. But it doesn't make Ovechkin a better hockey player.

Hold on for a second, there’s an important distinction to make to clarify my point of view.

He’s already the greatest goal scorer of all time IMO in the sense that what he did is unprecedented given how low scoring was across the league for most of his career.

The last feather in his cap is to occupy that #1 spot on the all time NHL rankings. Let’s call that the “all time leading goal scorer” if you prefer. Although it doesn’t make him a better hockey player than he was, it validates his performance through all these years and augments his legacy.

Every year after he reached 500 goals, Caps fans had already noticed that what he was doing was exceptional. There’s never been a better goal scorer past the age of 30 in league history. When you consider how high he peaked near age 22-24, it gives credibility to a claim that he is a top 10 player of all time.
