So, it turns out that you counted one WHA season three times. But you can still redeem yourself by adding Gretsky's goals he scored in junior hockey leagues to his total.
whoops ...... my research skills suck as you can see and pointed out.
Indianapolis....8 goals
Edmonton.......72 goals
One season ha!

no not at all.
being second to Wayne should stand as record on its own.
passing Gordie Howe instantly makes him a legend. ( if he wasn't already)
Ovi said himself that if he ends up being second, it would still be good. Being second only to Wayne is, indeed, legendary.

If his slow start was just that and not a sign of decline, he could still get to 30 this year (23 in 48 games) and then 43 next year he'd have the record with 1 more year on his contract still. Not going to count him out. Alex Ovechkin, Rafael Nadal, these are the types of guys who you should absolutely never ever count out. Wouldn't surprise me to see Ovi come back next year and score 50 even with how poorly he has produced this year so far.

He's absolutely declined. He can't keep up with his linemates. His shot is still elite, but so was Kessels even while he was getting scratched.

NUMBER 9 FOR GREAT 8!

Kidding I’m hoping he breaks the record. Although honestly with the time missed from the lockout plus Covid I already consider him the greatest goal scorer of all time
