Looks like Boston is in their Decline & Fall phase. Took long enough.
And they fired a great coach in the process
This summer really felt like the end of the Bruins "aura" to me. There was just so much noise around that team in a way you don't normally see. The E.Lindholm deal in particular just feels like a real turning point in that team's trajectory. In a vacuum it's fine, they needed a C and they paid market value to get one, but it just feels like they settled because they felt like they "needed" to fill that hole. He's fine but he's your #1 guy you've locked in and he's maybe the 25th-40th best C in the league on a year to year basis? Reminds me of when Nashville traded for Turris and gave him that big extension because they were just so desperate for a 2C.
I think last year made them really buy into their own invincibility when they survived without Bergeron and probably made them overlook how weak the supporting cast is around their core. I'm not sure Lindholm, Coyle, Zacha is even better than our center groups from the Desharnais, Plekanec, Eller days. On a longer timescale I think they also bought into their own
Bruins Culture bullshit way too much and convinced themselves they'd always be able to find a way to keep things going rather than admitting they got lucky with McAvoy and Pastrnak alongside Bergeron's aging curve and willingness to leave tens of millions on the table.
