So I'm thinking about hosting some sort of watch party assuming the Leafs do in fact play hockey at the end of the regular season, and since I'm stuck out here in LA I find myself unable to find a legitimate poutine option. I've only been to Canada twice, and both times I gorged myself on the dish. I've found a few recipes online, but then I thought to myself what better place to ask than the most knowledgeable message board in all the vast expanses of the interwebz? Can any of you share some good recipes for poutine? Maybe some family recipes that have been passed down, or some recipes you stole from various restaurants up north? Thanks!

Recipe:
-cheese curds
-fries
-top with gravy

BAM!

If you can make your own fries from scratch, you're golden. You want the saltiest gravy you can find. But make sure you get curds of cheese. Not grated cheese. CURDS.

Thanks, I always got a little doubtful when some recipes called for grated cheese on top. Are there any little variations you guys know of? As in certain seasonings, or deep fried potatos vs baked fries (kind of an oxymoron)?

I know the most important part of the recipe is to include an ice cold Molson Canadian on the side, possibly a Moosehead. Any other suggestions for good Canadian brew?

It's a very simple dish. Any recipe that strays away from fries, cheese curds, and gravy is bordering on blasphemy.

Best Poutine I've ever had is Woodlands in Verdun and they bake pizza cheese on top, no curds.

Add bacon to the top.

The above picture gave me heart palpitations just from looking at it.

Haven't had poutine for a while, the Welsh really don't know what they're missing over here.

Poutine is more of a Hab thing anyway.

I'd bet more Leaf fans eat Wings during games than Poutine.

I believe the hab version is sprinkled with estrogen and served with an unwelcome and undeserved sense of superiority. And a tutu.

You want fried in oil fries. If you're making them at home using a deep fryer, the trick is to cook them twice. Cook 'em once so they're juuust done, let them cool, then cook 'em again and serve.

For gravy, I'd go to whatever restaurant is local that has good fries-gravy you like and ask them to fill up a tupperware thing for you.

For beer, generic plain watery big-market crap sucks. You're in LA, you should have access to GREAT beer. Get some Lagunitas or something and chug away.

Oh and adding bacon to anything makes it better. Good call on that one.

Maybe even some chopped green onions on top as well just for show.

Ahh ****, looks like I'm having poutine for supper!

I've been sucking back waaaaayyyyy too many bottles of Little Sumpin Sumpin ale the past few days, Lagunitas is a godsend. For a Leafs party though I feel like I need to stock up on some fine Canadian ale.

I don't know about serving Poutine if the Leafs play the Habs in the first round. It is way more of a Quebec specialty then an Ontario one. As a poster pointed out wings may be the better option(since Buffalo won't be there).

It does bring up a good question...what is the iconic "Leaf" game day snack?

Let me just say how great it is to know that some guy who calls himself "Sundinology" lives in the same city as me.

I live in LA as well. BTW have you been to Soleil? It's a restaurant in Westwood owned by an older man from Quebec that SPECIALIZES IN POUTINE. I'm not kidding. The guy is obsessed with Poutine, he has 8 different ones on the menu, I believe.

I tried the traditional one and it's great but he says the filet mignon one blows it away.

We'll be having the Leafs playoffs game showing at a bar in Weho. I'm going to try to have him cater it. I don't know about a private message option (new to the board) but if you're interested I'll send you an invite.
