Not bad numbers but I still don't understand this team's insistence on drafting guy 30-40 spots above their consensus rank. It bit us in the ass big time last year.

if Aragorn worked for the Sens, Lawson Crouse would be on the team by now.
They are drafting players that fit the style they are looking for - big kids that skate fast and play hard.
If they insist on only drafting the same style of player they are going to have to reach because there's only so many big athletic kids.
I'm OK with reaching for player style in 3rd round as would much rather here than top 10 pick.
That said (and admittedly don't know these kids) hearing about the, "pure offensive" talent in the players chosen all around our 2 picks hurts a tad.
I like big and fast though.

Maybe they just cant identify hockey sense. Or dont value it.
Aragorn must be so happy right now.
It's clear they don't value hockey sense or puck skill as much as most other scouting staffs.
It's a shame because the vast majority of draft steals have been players that have above average skill and IQ and manage to overcome athletic or off-ice issues (size, skating, attitude, etc...).

Consensus rank means absolutely nothing past the first round (and sometimes it doesn't even mean anything in the first round, as we saw with yesterday). Many teams take guys ranked way lower than the online scouts have them, this isn't an Ottawa thing, it's an NHL scout/GM thing.

McKenzie only does up to the top 90 (with a few honorable mentions), and while he does poll 10 NHL scouts, it's still only 10 scouts, when there's probably over 200 amateur scouts employed in the NHL.

True, but this is also why I don't mind the team "reaching" after the first 3 rounds... It's important to hit once or twice in the first 3 rounds then go with "projects" for the other rounds.
Last year, we reached on our first 4 picks through the first 3 rounds. Luckily, Ostapchuk seem like it might pay off but we can't say that the Boucher and Roger picks are promising right now

Oskar Pettersson is a strong kid who plays on the edge. He’s capable of making vicious open ice hits, stapling players against the boards, and he is often involved in altercations after the whistle. Pettersson agitates opponents and hits to hurt. His knee on knee hit on Matteo Reinard late in the game in Monthey brought the home crowd out of their seats. Pettersson followed it up by roughing up the Swiss players who came to Reinhard’s aid. Oskar plays with a good complete level, finishes his checks, goes to the net and opens up space for his linemates through his physical play. He has a solid, accurate wrister which he gets off quickly. He is a force when powering down the wing at full flight. Pettersson is hard on the forecheck, putting pressure on defensemen retrieving pucks. Pettersson featured mostly as a top six winger for Sweden this year, but struggled at times to keep up with his linemates. His top end speed is good, but his pace of play in general is still developing. He makes effective slips and outlet passes and can score on the rush, but he lacks the necessary skill and playmaking ability to make plays on a regular basis in a top-six role. For a player of his stature, Pettersson is too easily beaten off the wall. Most concerningly, Pettersson was undisciplined at bad times this year. Late in the gold medal game against the United States, for example, he took an unnecessary boarding penalty (a hit from behind) which could have allowed the Americans to get back into the game.

Playing hard is great, and looks good on the ice. And being big helps.
But man, you also need guys who can think fast and really understand the game. We definitely need elite playmakers (and they are harder to find than most folks realize).
