Osgood from '02 or Nabakov from '13

I would say Osgood. Nothing against Nabokov; just that Osgood had a terrific season (his '01-'02 season and DiPietro's '06-'07 season were by far the best goaltending seasons we've had since the 1980s) and was still in his prime.

Nabby has been the better BY FAR regular season with his performance this year, but.....this debate can reach anyone older with this comparison: Chico Vs Smitty. Chico had a better regular season and did well in the playoffs but Smitty OWNED the postseason. Oz always has been a playoff warrior.

But now, I'm hoping Nabby can show us this goaltending or better unlike his history with San Jose. I think he can muster it with this team.....he can't let his guard down once with our roster and has shined when given that reality.

I want the the fifth seed. No home ice advantage unless we advance.

Nabby's scorching hot right now. Osgood was stellar at the beginning of that season.

Don't look now, but Nabby is 20-11-4 overall with a .945 save% over this streak. He is the biggest reason we're here right now.

Lundqvist is 18-14-3 with a line-up that was projected to reach the finals.

I'll take Nabber.

Nabby. When you take on the ice, locker room (underestimated by many), and overall steady play.

Osgood was great but Nabby is playing on his head with his legs split.

well if he learned to close em, his save percentage would go up to like .970

Who had/has better defensemen, Osgood or Nabby?

Interesting question.

The 01/02 team had a stronger top 3 with Hamrlik, Aucoin and Jonsson (it even feels good typing their names) in their prime. 8 other D played at least 14 games for the Isles that year. Guys like Tarnstrom, Cairns, Kiprusoff, Martinek(!), Mezai, Korolev, Van Impe, etc... mostly forgettable players.

But with how the current team is playing, this is maybe a better balanced top 6. With 5 puck movers and a good amount of offensive skill with Streit, Viz and Hickey. Amac and Hammer can certainly shoot it and are showing their shut down value. Our bottom guys are not bad in Carkner, Martinek and Strait showed he belongs in the future. Even Finley showed promise in the last few games he played.

I wish this team had a Brendan Witt type in his prime. Carkner is a poor man's Witt but should prove valuable in the playoffs.

Tough choice... I LOVED that top 3, by far my favorite top 3 since the Cup days. But for the first time in 10 years, I'm confident with this group. Huge scare when Hammer went down. Can't believe he came back in the next period. The kid sure is a warrior with a perfect attitude.

Very happy with the whole team when Reasoner isn't in.

With the current young D prospects, we could have a top 10 D in 2/3 years.

I think Osgood had the better of the defenseman to be honest.

Aucion-Hamerlik
Jonsson-Martinek
tarnstrom-Cairns

vs

hickey-Viz
Hammer-Amac
Carkner-Streit

I'm pretty sure 2001-02 season was the year Aucion led the league in ice time (29 minutes a night). That's half the game and he was extremely steady. So was Jonsson (25 min.) and Hamerlik (25 min) who played a ton of minutes. This years defense doesn't drop off as much 1-6 and are more offensive-minded but I think positionally in the defensive zone the 01-02 team had a better defense 1-4.

Did I get into this to much? :sarcasm:

Ah ******* it....Lets go NABBY!

Osgood ended one playoff drought for us and it appears Nabby will end another.

LOVED Osgood, one of my favorite Islanders of all time despite not being here for that long, but i have to say that Nabby is the man right now:handclap:

neither team makes the playoffs without the goaltending both provided, so ill call this one a draw

I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Nabby. I still think he has another gear to hit. We have seen him raise his play in this recent playoff push and I expect him to take it up a notch if/when we make the playoffs.

you know, i agree. i think that, IF we make the playoffs, he'll surprise people. he's at the point in his career where the mental aspect of his game is in a vicelock. it'll be all cerebral and he's got the smarts for a good run... couple that with the fact that his skills, while not mid aughts sharp, are plenty sharp.
