..because comparing teams years apart with vastly different lineups makes sense .. jebus some people ... if your trying to make a point , perhaps comparing an UNEMPLOYED coach to Keefe probably works more against you than for you....;) just saying ... hey if you like inconstant effort and teams that always exit in the 1st round ... that's on you ...
They’ve been consistently top 10 defensively since he took over. For the years prior they were bottom 10 under babcock. You can literally draw a line when they started to become more reliable defensively and it started when Keefe took over.

So what your saying is there is no difference between a core of players who is very young an inexperienced and a core that is older and has experience? Gotcha. Hockey may not be your thing.

The simplest stat of all is the GA/G, to me, it really does not look like Keefe is materially any better than an unemployed former coach? The way you were paining it you'd think Keefe is some sort of hockey genius... why be so misleading? TBH ya over sold it.. Keefe is not that hockey genius. Ya got a pandemic shortened season and a partial season that eliminates the dog days where teams often go into a defensive swoon. So ya , comparing apples to oatmeal.

This is so disingenuous, there’s literally a point in time you can see a dramatic change. It’s when Keefe took over, so if these core players matured like you’re claiming why are we still having issues getting out of round one?

Would be nice to draft and develop a starting goalie. It’s been way too long

Not a ton really. I think the most likely option is jack regains form and we re sign him for 3.5-4.5 depending. Then we look to move on mrazek.

BUT if he doesn’t. Options are:

Go big:
If Anaheim signals rebuild. Gibson will want out. He hates losing. Same with helle. Those would be your only established starters that could trade for.

let Campbell walk. Trade mrazek plus ( a lot) for one of those 2.

a lesser move would be Varlamov. But thar would be east….. grubauer maybe? If we believe in him but that would be a huge risk.

2.) go for ufa

-fleury
-husso
-holtby
-kuemper
-Francouz are the only real options.

of “contenders” us and colorado/Edmonton would need goaltending. We would be second on the list probably for those players. Don’t know if I would spend on husso.

3.) go for young rfa. That was my pick. I wanted vanacek or hill last year. Still could be an option

Best goalie of the trades would be helley. Most likely would be Gibson.

of the ufa might have to go with husso or francouz.

not a ton of great options.

As for goalie options, I'd be looking at Holtby and Varlamov. Honestly I'd try to bring both of them in if Mrazek can be jettisoned. Two long time vets that have what it takes and shouldn't be too costly.

I love Campbell, but the Leafs in their current state aren't the right team for him to succeed. I think he'd do really well on a team with competent goalie coaching like the Isles. Trade Campbell and a pick/prospect for Varlamov. Trade another pick/prospect to Dallas for Holtby. Pray that a team like Arizona or Buffalo will take Mrazek.

Would be huge moves and take a whole lotta heavy lifting.

I would be ok with a Gibson+Woll tandem over Campbell + Mrázek.

I think petruzelli is the best option we have to be a star. Have to get him on an A deal.

next year I think kalgren would be backup if we got like a gibby. Petro and Holl split marlies

Plus a second line winger. Too many holes.

They have $40,000,000 tied into their top 2 lines.

I refuse to buy into this idea that they need forward help in the top 6 - if that's truly the case, then it's time to just blow this project up.

What's the point of locking all those forwards down for all that money, crippling this team's depth, only to need MORE money to help them get over the hump?

Yup and if a move were to be made how does that play out

Exactly.

This isn't just with the Leafs - I think league wide we are going to see a pretty underwhelming deadline, because everyone is so capped out and those that aren't are still on pandemic budgets.

As I've said for a decade, the hard cap has ruined this game.

It just pissess me off that other teams have such unique value propositions like Texas and Florida have less tax... L.A has nice climate. We can’t use our benefit which is our ability to have a high payroll. Not a fan of the cap either.

Toronto is still a world class city, with awesome food, shopping, airport location, etc.
Sponsorship and endorsement opportunities (OUR FOURTH LINE CENTER PLAYS HALF A HORSE IN A COMMERCIAL).
Center of the Hockey Universe etc.
Loads of benefits of playing in Toronto, that go beyond the high payroll.
And the Leafs still have one of the most expensively constructed front offices and scouting staffs.
Cap teams like Toronto will feel the cap crunch even more, which is why it's a stupid system, especially when you consider how the big spending markets are often the biggest contributors to the HRR while other teams are playing in 3500 seater University stadiums taking those HRR payments..
A soft cap or luxury tax cap system is something the NHL will never agree to, but it's something that would massively improve the overall product.

So many ways to make it work. Just a couple of ideas:

- For every dollar over the cap, you pay another dollar into revenue sharing
- If you go over the cap, you forfeit draft picks depending on how much you go over (1st rounder if $10M+, 2nd rounder if $5M+ etc.)
- If you go over the cap, you have to share your arena with the Coyotes

I’d love Gibson. He’s injury prone though, and making around 6.5m I believe.
