Who would you have drafted?
For the sake of simplicity, just pretend you would have traded up for Cossa/Buium. And then traded down in Rd 4.
Or don't lol.
Bold=Red Wing picks I keep

1-6th - Edvinsson
1-15-Cossa - could have gone Svechkov here and I would have been OK.
2-4th-Fedotov - It was Pinelli or Fedotoiv here for me. Fedotov might be top 5 skilled guys in the draft.
3-6th- Savage - Lukashevich was the top name on my list at the time. But I wouldn't have drafted him after taking Edvinsson and Buium.
4-18th- Mast - Can't draft Savage twice. So Mast was the top name on my list.
5-6th- Dower Nilsson - Solid.
5-27- Plandowski - Didn't know I wanted him, but I'll keep him.
6-6th - Peter Reynolds - Top player left on list.

1 (6) - William Eklund (C/W)
1 (15) - Sebastian Cossa (G)
2 (36) - Francesco Pinelli (C)
3 (70) - Kirill Kirsanov (D)
4 (114) - Red Savage (C)
5 (134) - Verner Miettinen (C)
5 (155) - Nikita Dishkovsky (W)
6 (166) - Niko Huuhtanen (W)

So many players I wanted, so it sucks losing that many picks, but I would have been happy with this.

I also like the Wings picking Buium and Plandowski, very good tools on them.

I wish we kept the extra 2nds and 3rds where I would have targeted: Raty, Grushnikov, Sardaryan, Fedotov, Helenius, Hinds or Buium (Wings got him tho!)

And with the extra 6th: Arcuri, St.Louis or Quapp, maybe Medina

Using a lot of hindsight as to who went where…

6-Eklund
15-Svechkov
36-Buium/Heimosalmi was hoping for Zellweger
70-Kirsanov

At this point, I don’t know enough to really make any changes, but I logically like the last batch of picks, so I’d stick with Savage, Dower Nilsson, Plandowski.

The Zito pick is one I’m interested in seeing next year, but I’d defer to anyone who was really motivated for someone else.

My last note would be, I’m not at all upset with how this class played out. I could argue I like what actually happened more than what I would have done…mainly because Edvinsson was top 5 for me…just behind Eklund in this scenario, so I don’t feel like I’m giving much up in value there. And I never would have picked the goalie, but someone has to have the balls to put the plan into action. Now that it’s done, I am warm to the thought of it.

3-6th- Salminen - Gives us a shot a big, goalscoring center.
4-18th- Savage - Would have been comfy taking this guy in Rd 3.
5-6th- Dower Nilsson - Solid.
5-27- Plandowski - Didn't know I wanted him, but I'll keep him.
6-6th - Ryan Mast - Big defenseman was 65th on my list.

Salminen was taken prior to our pick in the 3rd round.

6th. Clarke or Eklund. I think they are more translatable as top 4 or top 6 players at their respective positions, but I'm alright with the upside pick for Edvinsson, despite my concerns.
15th. Wallstedt or Lysell. But this was the proper range to get Cossa in IMO, and we moved ahead of Kenny to get him. Great pick even if I would have done differently.
36. Raty or Morrow. Big fan of those two players. But I like the idea of continuing to stack upside D men.
70. Robertsson was the clear BPA in my mind. Wonder what happened. I really don't get the Mazur pick, whereas I get the Hanas selection last year, I just didn't like it.
114. Red Savage. Great pick! Looove his game and his name.
134. Liam Dower Nilsson. Another sneaky good pick, I had other guys I liked but none that really stood out to me.
155. Plandowski. Same with you MBH, seems like a solid toolkit for a late round pickup.
166. Krebs or Thomas. But at this stage I don't really sweat who is the pick.

I’m 100% fine with the draft as is. Maybe I flip the Red Savage and Carter Mazur picks so it doesn’t feel like I reached on Mazur and got a break on Savage.

I’m pretty satisfied. The top of the draft went well and once we are in the third and later, it all starts becoming a crapshoot. Maybe those guys flop and maybe they don’t. I think it’s crazy to light up those picks as being worthless right now

Not knowing where players were picked, no trades:
6. Wallstedt
23. Lambos

Knowing where players were picked, making the 15 trade:
6. Clarke
15. Wallstedt

I think we're going to regret taking Cossa instead of Wallstedt.

#6 LD Edvinsson (I'm actually OK with Edvinsson at this spot now after having a long think. I would have initially gone with Eklund)
#15 C Svechkov (Svechkov or Wallstedt were my preferred players here. I'm hoping that we don't regret moving for Cossa.)
#36 C/W Doan (If you want grit and character this was the guy to grab. Not Mazur.)
#70 D Anton Olsson (How we missed on a guy that's been compared to a young Mattias Ekholm when we're looking for more D I don't know.)
#114 C/LW Red Savage (Not mad about this pick)
#134 C Liam Dower Nilsson (Not mad about this pick either.)

#155 RD Ethan Samson
#166 W Florian Elias

I think we're going to regret taking Cossa instead of Wallstedt.

I absolutely have this fear. Wallstedt looks so poised today.

But Cossa's potential is indeed sky high. He has the right attitude and all the tools. So I'm just letting this marinate. Cossa is undeniably one of the better goalie prospects of the last decade, so I'm thrilled he's in the Wings pipeline.

And our Swedish scouts must have saw Wallstedt more than any other goalie. For Pete's sake he lives down the road from Lidstrom. If they didn't believe in him the way they did Cossa, there's got to be a reason we're not privileged to.

Guessing it would have looked something like this with how my board was...

6- Simon Edvinsson, D
15- Jesper Wallstedt, G
36- Francesco Pinelli, C
70- Anton Olsson, D
114- Robert Orr, C
134- Ty Voit, C/W
155- Connor Lockhart, C
166- Ty Gallagher, D

I think I'll do one with the trades and one without, mostly because I don't believe I'd have made those trades

Actual:

(6) - William Eklund (C/W)
(15) - Jesper Wallstedt (G)
(38) - Aatu Raty (C)
(70) - Anton Olsson, (D)
(114) - Kyle Masters (D)
(134) - Jacob Guevin (D)
(155) - Ryan McCleary (D)
(166) - Eric Alarie (W)

And if we didn't make any trades (Just took the positions from the simulator, it may not be 100% correct):

(6) William Eklund (C/W)
(22) Aatu Raty, C
(37) Logan Stankoven, C
(47) Anton Olsson, LD
(69) Stanislav Svozil, LD
(101) Conner Roulette, W
(127) Kyle Masters, D
(133) Kirill Gerasimyuk, G
(137) Jacob Guevin, D
(165) Ryan McCleary, D

My previous years drafts can be found here.

Just for fun this is what "my" prospect pool is shaping up to be:

William Eklund - Trevor Zegras - Jonatan Berggren
Noel Gunler - Marco Rossi - Aatu Raty
Nikola Pasic - Joe Veleno - Samuel Fagemo
Daniil Gushchin - Roni Hirvonen - Pavel Dorofeyev
Alex Pashin - Dmitry Ovchinnikov - Zion Nybeck
Eric Alarie - Patrik Puistola

Jeremie Poirier - Calen Addison
Anton Olsson - Anttoni Honka
Anton Johannesson - Samuel Johannesson
Kyle Masters - William Villeneuve
Slava Demin - Jacob Guevin
Ryan McCleary

Jesper Wallstedt
Devon Levi
Dustin Wolf
Amir Miftakhov

I'm quite happy with the forward group and the goalies. Even without Wallstedt there would be 3 strong goalie prospects in the pipeline. The defence doesn't have a standout skater, but Poirier, Addison, Olsson, and Honka look to be trending towards top 4 level D. I think if this was real life I'd have been open to picking a D at 6 giving the strength of the forward group, especially if there was no trade up scenario.

My hope is that it ends up being like the Devils and Buffalo in the late 90s. Yeah, Buffalo has Hasek, but at least we have Martin Brodeur. In my eyes, based on watching a lot of Wallstedt film over the last two months, Wallstedt's floor is a good NHL starter, and sooner rather than later. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wallstedt as a full-time NHL starter within 3 seasons.
